Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Gagok
Gagok (가곡) is a refined genre of Korean courtly vocal music consisting of lyric song cycles set to sijo poetry and accompanied by a small jeongak ("proper music") orchestra. It exists in distinct repertoires for male (namchang) and female (yeochang) voices. Emerging from the aristocratic salon culture of late Joseon Korea, gagok shapes three-line sijo texts into extended, highly ornamented melodies in the ujo and gyemyeonjo modal systems. The accompaniment typically features a soft yet stately chamber ensemble (piri, daegeum, haegeum, gayageum or geomungo, and janggu) that articulates cyclical rhythms (jangdan) while sustaining a contemplative pace. Considered one of the most elegant vocal traditions within Korean classical music, gagok was recognized as a National Important Intangible Cultural Heritage in the 1960s and inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Jeongak
Jeongak is the refined classical court and aristocratic music of Korea, encompassing ritual (aak), Chinese-derived (dangak), and native court (hyangak) traditions under a broader aesthetic of elegance, restraint, and balance. It is performed on an ensemble of wind, string, and percussion instruments such as piri and daegeum (oboes and transverse bamboo flutes), haegeum (two‑string fiddle), gayageum and geomungo (zithers), and various drums and gongs. The style emphasizes calm tempi, cyclical rhythmic patterns (jangdan), heterophonic texture, and subtle ornamentation (sigimsae and nonghyeon). Core repertory includes suites like Yeongsanhoesang and Boheoja and the stately music for royal ancestral rites (Jongmyo Jeryeak). Jeongak is closely associated with Confucian court culture and literati ideals, privileging poise, precision, and contemplative beauty.
