Spoken Word
Spoken word is a performance-centered genre where text—poems, monologues, stories, or manifestos—is delivered aloud with musicality in voice rather than through singing. It may be entirely a cappella or accompanied by sparse instrumentation (often jazz combos, ambient textures, or minimal electronics) that frames the cadence and rhetoric of the performer. The emphasis is on language: prosody, pacing, imagery, and argument. Pieces often explore personal narratives, social critique, and political themes, drawing on techniques such as internal rhyme, alliteration, and repetition. While recordings exist, the tradition is fundamentally live, prioritizing immediacy, audience engagement, and oratorical presence.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Gamelan Gender Wayang
Gamelan gender wayang is a Balinese chamber gamelan ensemble closely associated with wayang kulit (shadow-puppet theatre) and important life‑cycle rituals. It is typically scored for a quartet of metallophones called gender wayang, each with bronze keys suspended over bamboo resonators and struck with disc‑headed wooden mallets while the non‑striking hand executes precise damping. The music features rapid interlocking (kotekan) between paired parts that create dazzling, filigreed textures above a core melody (pokok). Instruments are tuned in paired “beating” sets (pengumbang/pengisep) to produce ombak, the characteristic acoustic shimmer. Repertoires are cast in a five‑tone slendro‑like scale over roughly two octaves, with flexible cyclic phrasing that breathes with the drama of the puppetry and the cues of the dalang (puppeteer).
