Barockinterpreten
Barockinterpreten (German for “Baroque interpreters”) is a performer-focused category within Western classical that centers on historically informed performances (HIP) of 17th–18th century Baroque repertoire. It emphasizes period instruments, historical tunings, and style-sensitive articulation and ornamentation. Typical recordings feature smaller, agile ensembles, vivid rhythmic profiles (often derived from courtly dances), and continuo-led textures. Tempi, articulation, and dynamics aim for rhetorical clarity, with vibrato treated as an expressive ornament rather than a constant. The result is an energetic, transparent, and dance-inflected sound that contrasts with the heavier, Romantic-influenced Baroque of the mid-20th century mainstream.

Early Music
Early music is a modern performance movement devoted to the repertoire of the Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque eras (roughly before c. 1750), approached with historically informed performance (HIP) practices. It emphasizes period instruments (or faithful replicas), historical tunings and temperaments, original notations and sources, and performance conventions documented in treatises of the time. The sound world ranges from monophonic chant and modal organum, to intricate Renaissance polyphony, to the emergence of basso continuo and dramatic affect in the early Baroque. Rather than being a single historical style, early music is a contemporary practice of reviving diverse pre‑Classical musics with scholarly rigor and artistic vitality.

Historically Informed Performance
Historically informed performance (HIP) is a performance practice that aims to recreate music using the instruments, techniques, tunings, ensemble sizes, and interpretive habits that were current when the works were first written. Rather than being a fixed sound, HIP is a research‑driven approach that reads treatises, scores, letters, iconography, and archival evidence to decide how to articulate, ornament, tune, phrase, and balance the music. Although it is most closely associated with Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical repertories, HIP has expanded into Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and even early twentieth‑century music. Core elements include period instruments (or replicas), historically appropriate pitch standards and temperaments, rhetorical phrasing aligned with dance and speech, and improvisatory practices such as extempore ornamentation and continuo realization.

Baroque
Baroque is a period and style of Western art music spanning roughly 1600–1750. It is characterized by the birth of functional tonality, the widespread use of basso continuo (figured bass), and a love of contrast—between soloist and ensemble, loud and soft, and different timbres. Hallmark genres and forms of the era include opera, cantata, oratorio, concerto (especially the concerto grosso), dance suite, sonata, and fugue. Textures range from expressive monody to intricate counterpoint, and melodies are richly ornamented with trills, mordents, and appoggiaturas. Baroque music flourished in churches, courts, and theaters across Europe, with regional styles (Italian, French, German, English) shaping distinctive approaches to rhythm, dance, harmony, and ornamentation.

Baroque Violin
Baroque violin refers both to the instrument in its Baroque setup and to the repertory and performance practice for violin from roughly 1600–1750. Typical instruments use gut strings, a lighter bass bar, a shorter/shallower neck angle, and no chin- or shoulder-rest. They are paired with a Baroque bow, whose camber and weight distribution encourage speech‑like articulation, sprung strokes, and a clear attack/decay. Pitch is commonly at A≈415 Hz (varying by region), and temperaments may be circulating or meantone rather than modern equal temperament. Stylistically, Baroque violin playing emphasizes rhetorical phrasing (the "Doctrine of Affections"), ornamental vibrato (used as a coloristic embellishment rather than a constant), extempore ornamentation, and expressive bowing. The music lives in sonatas (da chiesa/da camera), dance suites, concerti (including the concerto grosso), and theatrical or sacred contexts, nearly always underpinned by basso continuo.

Bohemian Baroque
Bohemian Baroque refers to Baroque-era music cultivated in the historical lands of Bohemia and Moravia (today the Czech Republic). It flourished in courts, cathedral chapels, Jesuit colleges, and pilgrimage churches during the 17th and early 18th centuries. Stylistically, it blends Italianate concertato writing and the stylus phantasticus with the contrapuntal rigor of Central Europe. It emphasizes basso continuo, expressive rhetoric, chromatic inflection, and brilliant writing for strings and natural trumpets, while also preserving a rich vernacular hymn tradition (kancionál) in Czech. The repertoire spans masses, litanies, motets, sonatas, sacred cantatas, and devotional songs, ranging from monumental polychoral works to intimate pieces for voice and continuo. Its sound world is at once ceremonial and devotional, often marked by festive trumpets for feast days and poignant chromaticism in penitential movements.
