Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Gregorian Chant
Gregorian chant is the central Western tradition of plainchant: a monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song in Latin (and occasionally Greek) used in the Roman Catholic liturgy. It employs free rhythm guided by the prosody of the text rather than by strict meter, and is sung in unison by clerics or scholas. Its melodies are organized by the system of eight church modes, with characteristic finalis (final), tenor/reciting tones, and melodic formulas. Repertoires include the Proper and Ordinary of the Mass (e.g., Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) and the Divine Office (e.g., Antiphons, Responsories, Hymns, Psalms). Although legend credits Pope Gregory I, modern scholarship sees Gregorian chant as a Carolingian synthesis of Old Roman and Gallican chants, standardized across Frankish realms and later the broader Latin West.

Syriac Chant
Syriac chant is the liturgical chant tradition of Syriac Christianity, sung in Classical Syriac (a dialect of Aramaic) across the East Syriac and West Syriac rites. It is one of the oldest living Christian chant repertories and is transmitted largely through oral tradition. Musically, Syriac chant is monophonic, highly text‑centered, and typically performed unaccompanied by a solo cantor (ḥazzā) and/or a small choir with congregational responses. Melodies follow modal formulae preserved in collections such as the Beth Gazo (“Treasury of Melodies”), favoring free, speech‑like rhythm, extensive ornamentation, and melismatic expansion on key liturgical words. Modern performances often exploit long reverberation in stone churches, using sustained tones and carefully paced phrases to let the text and ornaments bloom in the space. While the earliest manuscripts are scarce, the style that survives today reflects very ancient Near Eastern and early Christian practices, later colored by regional modal sensibilities. The repertory encompasses hymns (madrāshē), responses (ʿonyōtā), psalmody, and processional pieces integral to daily offices and the Eucharistic liturgy.
