Christian R&B blends the vocal style, grooves, and production of contemporary R&B with explicitly Christian themes and gospel-rooted harmony. It features smooth, melismatic lead vocals, stacked background harmonies, and bass‑led, mid‑tempo rhythms, often drawing on hip‑hop drums and neo‑soul chords. Lyrics center on faith, testimony, encouragement, and worship while maintaining the intimacy and emotional candor typical of R&B. Across the 2000s and 2010s, the style absorbed trap‑soul textures (808s, atmospheric pads, half‑time feels) and pop‑worship songwriting structures, broadening its reach in both church and mainstream adjacent spaces.

French R&B (R&B français) is a francophone take on contemporary R&B that blends sleek, groove‑driven production with French pop sensibilities and urban slang. It typically features smooth, melismatic vocals, mid‑tempo rhythms, and lush harmonies, while drawing on hip‑hop’s drum programming and featured rap verses. Shaped by France’s multicultural scene, the style often integrates influences from raï and zouk as well as US new jack swing and neo‑soul. Lyrics commonly explore love, vulnerability, empowerment, and everyday city life, delivered in conversational French (sometimes with verlan, Arabic, Lingala, or English code‑switching). Since the 2010s, the sound has increasingly absorbed Afrobeats/afropop grooves and trap‑era textures, widening its appeal across the francophone world.

Gospel R&B is a fusion of contemporary rhythm-and-blues production with the lyrics, harmonies, and performance practices of Black church gospel. It features soulful lead vocals, rich call-and-response with choirs, and harmonically sophisticated progressions (extended 7ths/9ths, secondary dominants, and classic gospel turnarounds) set over modern R&B grooves. Production draws on drum machines and programmed bass, Rhodes/organ/piano, smooth guitars, and polished vocal stacks, often incorporating hip‑hop swing and occasional rap cameos. Thematically, the music centers on faith, testimony, perseverance, and praise, while communicating through hooks and arrangements familiar to urban and R&B radio audiences. The result is uplifting, radio-ready gospel that resonates both in church and on mainstream platforms.

Rap chrétien is the French-language label for Christian hip hop, a subgenre of hip hop defined by explicitly Christian themes, biblical references, and testimony-driven storytelling. While sonically it spans classic boom-bap to modern trap and pop-rap, its lyrical core centers on faith, redemption, social conscience, and hope. Production often blends hip hop drums (from dusty breakbeats to 808-heavy trap) with gospel elements such as choir layers, church organs, soulful hooks, and worship-style refrains. Artists typically avoid profanity and emphasize uplifting, reflective, or evangelistic content, making the style at home both on mainstream platforms and within church or youth-group contexts. Across its history, rap chrétien has balanced cultural credibility within hip hop with theological authenticity, resulting in a scene that can be both street-aware and spiritually focused, from underground cyphers to charting albums and Grammy-winning releases.
