Traditional Folk
Traditional folk is a broad umbrella for orally transmitted songs and dance tunes that circulated in rural and working-class communities before the age of mass recording. Repertoires include narrative ballads, laments, love songs, work songs, lullabies, and instrumental dance sets such as reels, jigs, hornpipes, and marches. Stylistically, traditional folk favors strophic forms, pentatonic or modal melodies (often Dorian and Mixolydian), limited harmonic movement, and strong, memorable tunes designed for communal singing and dancing. Performances range from unaccompanied solo voice to small ensembles built around fiddle, flute/whistle, pipes, concertina/accordion, guitar, banjo, and frame drum. Ornamentation, variation by verse, and flexible tempo are integral, reflecting an oral tradition where songs live through continual reinterpretation. Although it is pan‑regional, the modern idea of “traditional folk” coalesced in the 19th century through collectors and revivalists who documented vernacular music and framed it as cultural heritage.

Ancient Greek Music
Ancient Greek music refers to the musical practices of the Greek world from the Archaic period through the Hellenistic and early Roman eras (roughly 8th century BCE to 3rd century CE). It was primarily monophonic, often performed by solo singer-instrumentalists or choruses, and closely tied to poetry, ritual, theater, and civic life. Its sound world was shaped by modal systems (harmoniai), tetrachordal structures, and three genera (diatonic, chromatic, enharmonic), with tuning and intervallic ethos discussed by philosophers and theorists. Rhythm followed poetic meters (e.g., dactylic, iambic, paeonic), not modern bar-based accentuation. Instruments such as the lyre, kithara, and aulos dominated, with occasional percussion and later the hydraulis. Surviving notated fragments (e.g., the Seikilos epitaph, Euripides’ Orestes chorus, hymns by Mesomedes) and treatises (Aristoxenus, Aristides Quintilianus, Ptolemy) guide modern reconstructions. Beyond entertainment, music framed worship (hymns and paeans), athletic and civic festivals, tragedy and comedy, and education. It profoundly shaped later Mediterranean liturgical chant and European music theory.

Ancient Roman Music
Ancient Roman music refers to the musical practices of the Roman Republic and Empire, roughly from the early centuries BCE through Late Antiquity. It was largely monophonic and orally transmitted, used in civic ritual, theater, private banquets, military life, and religious cults. Its core sound world combined Greco-Roman string and wind instruments (cithara, lyre, tibia/aulos) with percussion (tympanum, cymbala, crotala, sistrum) and powerful brass (tuba, cornu, bucina). The hydraulis (water organ) added a distinctive timbre to spectacles. Rhythm often followed poetic meters, and performance likely favored heterophonic textures and ornamented melodic lines over harmonic progressions. Rather than a single unified style, Roman music was a mosaic: theatrical and dance music for the ludi, refined kithara- and lyre-centered song for elite salons, processional and cultic soundscapes (including Egyptian-Isiac elements), and martial brass for command and ceremony.
