Hauntology
Hauntology is a retro-futurist strain of experimental electronic music that evokes the "ghosts" of lost cultural futures. Emerging in the United Kingdom in the mid‑2000s, it draws on half-remembered media—library music, public information films, children’s TV idents, and Radiophonic textures—to produce an atmosphere of eerie nostalgia and cultural memory. Sonically, the style favors degraded media and analogue patina: vinyl crackle, tape hiss, wow and flutter, and dusty archival samples. It often pairs subdued drones and detuned synths with looped fragments, sparse percussion, and unresolved harmonies to create a feeling that is at once comforting and unsettling. The term originates in Jacques Derrida’s philosophy and was popularized in a musical context by critics such as Mark Fisher and Simon Reynolds. In music, it names both a sound palette and a way of listening that foregrounds memory, media archaeology, and the uncanny persistence of the past within the present.

Acousmatic
Acousmatic music is a form of electroacoustic composition created specifically for loudspeakers, where the audience hears sounds without seeing their sources. The genre privileges timbre, morphology, and spatial movement over traditional melody and harmony, and it is often experienced in darkened auditoria to sharpen attention to pure listening. Composers typically work with recorded or synthesized sounds—ranging from environmental recordings and instrumental fragments to purely electronic textures—then edit, transform, and organize them into a fixed medium. Performance focuses on diffusion: the live projection of a fixed track across a multichannel loudspeaker array to sculpt space and perspective in real time.

Electroacoustic Composition
Electroacoustic composition is a branch of art music that uses microphones, tape, analog and digital synthesis, and studio processing to create works in which timbre, texture, space, and transformation are primary musical parameters. Emerging from the post‑war laboratory and broadcast studio, it brings together recorded real‑world sounds (musique concrète), purely electronic tones (elektronische Musik), and later computer processing. Works may be fixed‑media pieces diffused over multi‑speaker systems, or live‑electronics that transform acoustic sources in real time. Rather than traditional melody and harmony, form is often built from sound objects, spectral evolution, gesture, and spatial motion.

Theme
Theme is a screen-focused music style built around concise, highly memorable melodies (leitmotifs) designed to identify a film, television show, video game, or program within just a few seconds. It typically foregrounds a bold hook, clear harmonic grounding, and a distinctive timbral signature so that audiences can recognize the property instantly. While orchestral palettes are common—borrowing from classical and film score traditions—theme music also embraces jazz, pop, rock, and electronic idioms. Formats range from 10–30 second idents to full-length title sequences, and can be instrumental or song-based with lyrics that reflect the show’s narrative or brand.
