Free Jazz
Free jazz is a radical branch of jazz that rejects fixed chord progressions, strict meter, and conventional song forms in favor of collective improvisation, textural exploration, and spontaneous interaction. Musicians prioritize timbre, dynamics, and gesture as much as pitch and harmony, often using extended techniques (multiphonics, overblowing, prepared piano) and unconventional sounds. While rooted in the blues and earlier jazz vocabularies, free jazz frees improvisers from pre-set harmonic cycles, allowing lines to unfold over tonal centers, shifting modes, drones, or complete atonality. Rhythm sections may float without a steady pulse, or drive with layered polyrhythms and “energy playing.” The result ranges from contemplative soundscapes to cathartic, high-intensity eruptions. Culturally, the genre intersected with the civil rights era and broader avant-garde movements, emphasizing autonomy, community, and new possibilities for musical expression.

Adult Standards
Adult standards is a song-based popular style and later radio format centered on the Great American Songbook and pre-rock era pop. It emphasizes sophisticated vocal performances, memorable melodies, and lush arrangements drawn from Broadway, Hollywood musicals, big bands, and jazz-influenced traditional pop. Typical recordings feature rich orchestration (strings, woodwinds, and brass), a polished rhythm section, and crooner-style vocals delivered with close-mic intimacy. Harmonies often include jazz chords, secondary dominants, and modulations, supporting elegant, urbane lyrics that focus on love, longing, and everyday romance. Although it predates rock ’n’ roll in repertoire, adult standards also encompasses later revivals and reinterpretations by contemporary singers who keep the classic songbook alive through modern recordings and live performances.

Vocal Jazz
Vocal jazz is a jazz tradition in which the human voice is treated as an instrument—matching the phrasing, articulation, and timbral nuance of horns or piano. Singers often improvise melodically and rhythmically, including using scat singing (nonsense syllables) to emulate instrumental solos. At the same time, many vocal‑jazz performances favor traditional, pop‑leaning song structures and clear lyric delivery, reducing the overall role of extended improvisation compared with small‑group instrumental jazz. Repertoires frequently draw from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway standards (the Great American Songbook), rendered with swing, ballad, or Latin feels.

Euphonium
Euphonium (as a tagged style) refers to repertoire and performance practice centered on the euphonium—the tenor-voiced, conical-bore brass instrument of the tuba family. Its sound is warm, lyrical, and vocal, making it a natural vehicle for cantabile melodies as well as agile variation pieces. The instrument was developed in the mid‑19th century (credited to Sommer of Weimar in 1843) and quickly became the leading tenor brass voice in brass and military bands. Notationally, euphonium parts appear at concert pitch in bass clef and, in British-style brass bands, in treble clef transposed up a major ninth. Typical compass spans roughly from the third B♭ below middle C to about the C above middle C, with advanced players extending higher. These acoustical and notational traits shape the idiom of “euphonium music.”
