Proto-hyperpop is a retrospective label for the cluster of internet-born pop experiments in the early-to-mid 2010s that foreshadowed what would later be called “hyperpop.” It fused candy-coated melodies and pitched-up vocals with maximalist sound design, glossy synthetic timbres, and playful, self-aware pop tropes. Rather than being a single scene, proto-hyperpop emerged across YouTube nightcore edits, early PC Music releases, and adjacent electronic and indie-pop circles. It drew heavily from Eurodance and trance hooks, J-pop and Vocaloid aesthetics, chiptune brightness, and the irreverent futurism of experimental pop and deconstructed club, while keeping an addictive, radio-ready sense of melody.

Popwave is a song‑forward branch of synthwave that fuses glossy 1980s pop aesthetics with contemporary electronic production. Where classic synthwave often favors instrumental, cinematic moods, popwave puts vocals and hooks at the center: big choruses, radio‑ready structures, and emotive lyrics about youth, night drives, neon‑lit romance, and bittersweet nostalgia. Sonically it leans on analog‑styled polysynths, driving eighth‑note basslines, gated‑reverb drums, shimmering guitars, and frequent sax or lead‑guitar cameos—yet it’s mixed and mastered to modern pop standards. The result is a style that feels simultaneously retro and current: the color and optimism of 80s chart pop, filtered through the songwriting discipline of today’s electropop and the sound design DNA of synthwave.

Vapor pop is a glossy, internet-native strain of alternative pop that blends vaporwave’s hazy nostalgia with contemporary synth-pop and dream-pop songwriting. It favors soft-focus textures, clean but slightly detuned synths, breathy vocals, and gently pulsing beats that evoke late‑night drives, neon cityscapes, and digital romance. Where vaporwave deconstructs and slows down archival media, vapor pop translates that vaporous, retro-futurist palette into concise, hook-forward songs. The result is sleek and melancholic yet accessible: pop structures and earworm choruses wrapped in gauzy ambience, 80s/90s timbral references, and modern streaming-era minimalism.

Transpop is a contemporary pop micro-scene centered on transgender and gender‑expansive artists and narratives. It blends glossy pop songwriting with internet‑native production aesthetics drawn from hyperpop, electropop, and bedroom pop. Stylistically, it favors hook‑forward melodies, bright synths, pitched and processed vocals, and beat palettes that oscillate between four‑on‑the‑floor dance-pop and trap‑influenced rhythms. Lyrically it foregrounds identity, euphoria, dysphoria, love, self‑fashioning, and chosen family, often with a confessional, diaristic tone. While global and community‑driven, the sound coalesced online (SoundCloud/Discord/TikTok) and in indie queer club spaces, making it both danceable and emotionally candid.

Vapor soul is a vaporwave-adjacent microgenre that blends the chopped-and-screwed, sample-forward aesthetics of vaporwave with the smooth, sensual palette of R&B and soul. It typically repurposes fragments of 1980s–2000s slow jams, quiet storm, and adult contemporary R&B—slowing them down, pitching them, looping short motifs, and bathing them in reverb, chorus, and tape-like saturation. Compared with more ironic or corporate-sounding vaporwave, vapor soul usually emphasizes warmth, intimacy, and emotional “late-night” ambience, often preserving the original song’s romantic affect while abstracting it into hazy, dreamlike repetition.
