Shush is a functional microgenre of sleep-oriented audio built around continuous “shh/sshhh”‑like broadband noise and closely related soothing textures (white, pink, or brown noise; soft rain; waves). Producers design long, loopable tracks with minimal dynamics and no melody so the sound masks environmental noise and promotes infant and adult sleep. As a name, “shush” reflects the centuries‑old caregiving practice of calming babies by sustained shushing, which modern sleep science popularized through white‑noise devices and smart soothers. Contemporary catalogs typically offer multiple “shush” timbres (fast/slow shush, hair‑dryer, train, brown/white noise) and publish them on streaming services in multi‑hour formats.

Color noise is an umbrella term for steady‑state, spectrally shaped noise used as an end in itself for listening, masking, sleep, focus, and relaxation. Instead of musical melodies or beats, it presents continuous sound with a specific spectral tilt ("color") such as white (flat spectrum), pink (−3 dB per octave), brown or brownian (−6 dB per octave), blue (+3 dB per octave), violet (+6 dB per octave), and gray (psychoacoustically equal‑loudness shaped). As a listening genre, color noise emphasizes function and timbral nuance over song form: seamless loops, stable loudness, extremely low dynamic range, and gentle filtering. It sits at the intersection of sound design, psychoacoustics, audio engineering, and wellness media, and is commonly delivered via long streams, playlists, and apps rather than traditional albums.

Pink noise, as a music/utility genre, consists of long-form recordings of 1/f noise whose power decreases by ~3 dB per octave, yielding roughly equal energy per octave. Compared with white noise, it sounds smoother and less hissy, with a deeper, more natural tonal balance that many listeners find easier on the ears over extended periods. As a streaming category it functions primarily as "purpose-built audio" for sleep, focus, tinnitus masking, privacy, and mindfulness. Releases are typically hours long, loopable, and minimally varying, sometimes subtly modulated to prevent ear fatigue. Producers may leave the signal pure or blend it gently with environmental textures (e.g., light rain or fan hum) while avoiding melody and rhythm so the sound remains non-distracting.
