Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Native American Music
Native American music encompasses the diverse vocal and instrumental traditions of the Indigenous peoples of North America. It is primarily voice-centered, with communal singing supported by large powwow drums, hand/frame drums, water drums, rattles, and the Native American flute. Melodies often use pentatonic or anhemitonic scales and feature terraced (descending) contour, vocables (non-lexical syllables) alongside texts in Indigenous languages, and cyclic repetition in sets of 4 (reflecting cultural symbolism). Music serves ceremonial, social, healing, and storytelling functions, and is inseparable from dance and regalia. While distinct regional styles exist (Plains powwow, Southwestern Pueblo/Navajo, Great Basin, Northwest Coast polyphony, Inuit throat singing, Southeastern stomp dance traditions), all emphasize community participation, spiritual intention, and strong rhythmic grounding. Contemporary scenes range from traditional powwow and peyote songs to modern fusions that respect traditional aesthetics while engaging new forms.

Inuit Traditional
Inuit traditional is the ancestral music of the Inuit across the circumpolar Arctic (Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, NunatuKavut in Canada; Kalaallit Nunaat/Greenland; and Inupiaq/Yup'ik regions of Alaska). It centers on communal drum-dance songs (with the large frame drum called qilaat/killaaq), playful and competitive throat-singing duets (katajjaq/katajjaq; ayaya/ajaaja in some regions), lullabies, narrative chant-songs, and ritual pieces rooted in animist and shamanic worldviews. The sound palette is predominantly vocal: tight, cyclical breathing patterns and rhythmic vocables in throat-singing; call-and-response refrains in drum-dances; and declamatory, story-like delivery in narrative songs. Drumming provides a strong, steady pulse that supports simple, memorable melodic cells and vocables rather than elaborate harmonic progressions. Music functions as social glue—marking seasons, hunts, games, welcoming/“inviting-in” ceremonies, and community celebration.
