Joseon Pop
Joseon pop is a contemporary Korean fusion style that reimagines traditional gugak (Korean traditional music) aesthetics—especially vocal and rhythmic idioms—from the Joseon dynasty era within modern pop, rock, funk, and electronic frameworks. Typical markers include pansori-leaning vocals with expressive ornamentation (sigimsae), use of traditional modes (ujo, gyemyeonjo), and adaptation of jangdan rhythmic cycles (e.g., gutgeori, jungmori, jajinmori, hwimori) into drum-kit or electronic grooves. Instrumentation often blends gayageum, geomungo, haegeum, daegeum, piri, taepyeongso, janggu, and buk with bass guitar, synthesizers, and modern production. The result is music that feels simultaneously folk-rooted and danceable, ceremonial yet pop-forward.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Gayageum
Gayageum is music centered on the gayageum, a traditional Korean plucked zither with movable bridges. The classic instrument has 12 silk (now often nylon) strings, while modern concert versions commonly feature 18, 21, or 25 strings for broader range and chromatic possibilities. Its sound world is defined by supple plucked tones, rich overtones, and expressive pitch inflections created by pressing and bending strings left of the bridges. Core repertoire spans court and literati traditions (jeongak), lyrical song accompaniment (gagok/sijo), and virtuosic solo suites (sanjo), as well as improvisatory shaman-derived practice (sinawi). In contemporary music, the gayageum appears in chamber ensembles, jazz, film scores, and cross‑genre collaborations, retaining its idiomatic ornaments and rhythmic cycles (jangdan) while adapting to new harmonic languages.
