Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Adult Standards
Adult standards is a song-based popular style and later radio format centered on the Great American Songbook and pre-rock era pop. It emphasizes sophisticated vocal performances, memorable melodies, and lush arrangements drawn from Broadway, Hollywood musicals, big bands, and jazz-influenced traditional pop. Typical recordings feature rich orchestration (strings, woodwinds, and brass), a polished rhythm section, and crooner-style vocals delivered with close-mic intimacy. Harmonies often include jazz chords, secondary dominants, and modulations, supporting elegant, urbane lyrics that focus on love, longing, and everyday romance. Although it predates rock ’n’ roll in repertoire, adult standards also encompasses later revivals and reinterpretations by contemporary singers who keep the classic songbook alive through modern recordings and live performances.

Band Organ
Band organ refers to the mechanically performed, band‑like music produced by large fairground/carousel pipe organs. These organs were engineered to imitate a brass and reed band, complete with percussion, and were intended to project a bright, festive sound across noisy outdoor spaces such as midways and carousels. Unlike church organs, band organs are automatic instruments. They are driven by pinned cylinders, paper rolls, or (most commonly in Europe) folded card books, later adapted to pneumatic relays and, in modern restorations, MIDI. Their registrational color combines powerful reed ranks, bright flutes, and characteristic tremulants, alongside bass drum, snare, cymbals, triangle, and woodblock. The repertoire revolves around 2/4 marches, 3/4 waltzes, polkas, schottisches, and light popular tunes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
