Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Gnawa
Gnawa is a spiritual, trance-based music of Morocco associated with the Gnawa brotherhoods, a community with roots in sub‑Saharan Africa and Sufi Islam. It centers on a deep, percussive bass lute called the guembri (also known as sintir or hajhuj), the bright metallic clatter of iron castanets (qraqeb/krakebs), unison handclaps, and call‑and‑response vocals. Performances often unfold in an all‑night ritual called a lila (derdeba), where cyclical 6/8 grooves and repetitive chants invite communal participation and induce a trance state. The repertoire invokes saints and ancestral spirits (mluk), moving through color-coded suites and intensifying rhythmic layers. While firmly rooted in West African rhythmic sensibilities, Gnawa also absorbs Maghrebi and Sufi aesthetics, producing a sound that is both devotional and intensely groove‑driven.

Balafon
Balafon is a traditional West African xylophone-centered genre whose core sound comes from wooden keys mounted over gourd resonators fitted with buzzing membranes. The instrument’s bright, percussive tone and shimmering buzz create dense, interlocking patterns that are central to the music’s feel. Rooted in Mandé court and griot (jeli) traditions across today’s Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Côte d’Ivoire, balafon music features polyrhythmic ostinatos, call-and-response, and pentatonic or hexatonic tunings. Pieces are performed for praise-singing, ceremonies, festivals, and dance, often in ensembles with drums (dunun/djembe), voice, and other lutes or harps. Modern performers also adapt balafon to jazz and global fusion settings, preserving its cyclical grooves while expanding its harmonic palette.

Senegalese Traditional
Senegalese traditional music encompasses the ceremonial, communal, and courtly musical practices of Senegal’s many peoples (Wolof, Serer, Pulaar/Fula, Jola/Diola, Mandinka, and others). It is anchored by griot (gewel) lineages who preserve history and praise-singing, and by powerful drum ensembles centered on sabar and tama (talking drum), as well as string traditions like the xalam (khalam/ngoni), kora, and riti. Performed at life-cycle rituals, wrestling events (laamb), community festivals, and religious gatherings, the music is intensely rhythmic and participatory, featuring polyrhythms, call-and-response vocals, praise poetry (tassu), and dance-led forms such as ndawrabine and farwu. Melodically it favors modal and pentatonic frameworks, with expressive ornamentation informed by local languages and Islamic recitation aesthetics.
