Gufeng
Gufeng (古风, literally “ancient style”) is a modern Chinese pop-adjacent style that evokes the sound-world, imagery, and poetics of premodern China. It blends traditional instruments, pentatonic melodies, and classical literary diction with contemporary songwriting, recording, and distribution practices. Emerging largely from online communities and ACG (anime–comics–games/donghua) fandoms, Gufeng favors lyrical themes such as mountains-and-rivers landscapes, courtly romance, martial-arts chivalry, and historical fantasy. The production commonly combines guzheng, pipa, dizi, xiao, and erhu with soft pop arrangements, cinematic pads, and subtle electronic beats, resulting in a nostalgic yet fresh sound that is distinct from mainstream Mandopop.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Guzheng
Guzheng is a genre centered on the Chinese plucked zither (zheng), a long wooden box with movable bridges and 16–26 strings (21 is standard today). The instrument’s sound is characterized by bell‑like clarity, fluid glissandi, shimmering tremolos, and expressive pitch bends achieved by pressing the strings to the left of the bridges. Modern guzheng repertoire draws on older regional styles (Henan/Yu, Shandong, Chaozhou/Teochew, Hakka/Ke, Zhejiang) and the conservatory tradition that codified technique and composition in the mid‑20th century. Core melodic language is based on Chinese pentatonic modes (gong, shang, jue, zhi, yu), ornamented with slides (hua yin), grace‑note turns, harmonics (fan yin), and left‑hand vibrato (rou yin). Timbres range from delicate, watery arpeggios to percussive rasgueado‑like strokes and thunderous, multi‑string strums. Today the guzheng functions both as a solo concert instrument and within Chinese orchestras and cross‑genre fusions (world, ambient, pop, electronic), while retaining its intimate literati aesthetics of “sound painting” and narrative expression.
