Cimbalom
Cimbalom is a performance-centered genre built around the Hungarian concert cimbalom, a large chromatic hammered dulcimer played with lightweight beaters and controlled with a damper pedal. Its shimmering attacks, rolling tremolos, and bell-like arpeggios make it a signature sound of Central and Eastern Europe. While related dulcimers existed for centuries, the modern concert cimbalom was standardized in Budapest in the 1870s. The instrument then became central to urban Romani ("Gypsy") orchestras and Romanian taraf ensembles, and later entered classical, jazz, and film music. In this genre context, "cimbalom" denotes repertoire and ensembles where the instrument is the expressive lead voice.

Polka
Polka is a lively Central European couple dance and musical style in a brisk 2/4 meter, characterized by its buoyant “oom‑pah” bass-chord accompaniment and bright, diatonic melodies. Originating in Bohemia (today’s Czech Republic) in the early 19th century, it quickly became a pan-European craze before taking root across immigrant communities in the Americas. Ensembles typically feature accordion or button box/concertina, clarinet or saxophone, trumpets/trombone, tuba or string bass, and drum kit, with regional variants highlighting different lead voices and rhythmic feels. While the classical ballroom tradition codified polka into formal strains (often AABB with a contrasting trio), folk and popular styles favor singable tunes, simple I–IV–V harmonies, and tempos commonly around 115–135 BPM, inviting upbeat social dancing and communal celebration.

Moravian Folk
Moravian folk is the regional folk tradition of Moravia, the eastern part of today’s Czech Republic. It is marked by richly ornamented melodies, distinctive regional dialects, and the hallmark cimbalom band sound (cimbálová muzika) built from lead violin (primáš), accompanying viola (kontráš), double bass, cimbalom, and often clarinet or accordion. Across subregions such as Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia), Valašsko (Wallachia), Haná, and Lašsko (Lachia), the style ranges from lyrical wine‑cellar songs and wedding repertoire to vigorous men’s dances. Signature dance forms include the UNESCO‑listed Slovácko verbuňk (a recruiter’s solo dance) and the Wallachian odzemek. Modal inflections (notably Dorian and Mixolydian), heterophonic textures, and drones (from bagpipes or strings) give the music a vivid, earthy color. Performances are highly participatory and communal, with call‑and‑response refrains and strophic song forms tied to the rural calendar—harvests, vintages, and rites of passage—while polished ensemble traditions grew around radio orchestras and state folk ensembles in the 20th century.
