Say Sue Me

Korean shoegaze blends the hazy guitar washes and submerged vocals of classic shoegaze with the melodic sensibilities and DIY ethos of South Korea’s indie scenes. Expect dense, heavily effected guitars (fuzz, reverb, chorus), bittersweet melodies, and intimate, often introspective vocals sung in Korean or English. Many artists incorporate post-rock expanses, noise-pop grit, and dream-pop clarity, yielding songs that drift between airy nostalgia and cathartic noise. The scene grew around Seoul’s Hongdae live-circuit and later flourished online, where Bandcamp-first projects and bedroom producers helped globalize its sound.

Indie surf is a modern indie rock offshoot that borrows the twangy, reverb‑drenched guitars and beachy imagery of 1960s surf rock, then filters them through lo‑fi, DIY production and indie pop songwriting. It favors bright, chiming guitar tones (often Jazzmasters/Jaguars through spring reverb), simple, catchy melodies, and compact song forms. Vocals tend to be airy and drenched in space, with lyrics about youth, romance, coastal life, and bittersweet nostalgia. The sound emerged in the late 2000s blog era and crystallized in the early 2010s, especially around West Coast U.S. and Brooklyn scenes, intersecting with garage revival, dream pop, and slacker aesthetics.

Indie rock is a subgenre of rock and a branch of alternative rock that coalesced in the early–mid 1980s around independent labels and DIY practices in the United Kingdom, the United States, and New Zealand. Defined less by a single sound than by an ethos, indie rock favors non‑mainstream approaches, self‑recording and small‑label distribution, and an interest in pop‑informed melody and eclectic experimentation. Hallmarks include jangly or fuzzed guitars, intimate or deadpan vocals, off‑kilter song structures, and production that often preserves a raw, “authentic” feel rather than glossy studio polish.
