New wave of screamo (often abbreviated as NWoS) is a 2010s-era revival and expansion of 1990s/2000s skramz/screamo that blends the style’s raw catharsis with modern post-rock atmospherics, emo melodicism, and occasional blackgaze ferocity. It is characterized by desperate, high-register screamed vocals, whiplash dynamic contrast (from whisper-quiet, twinkly passages to explosive crescendos), tense, dissonant chord voicings alongside suspended/add9 “emo” harmonies, and drumming that can pivot from restrained, room-mic’d subtlety to blasty, emoviolence-adjacent bursts. Lyrics tend to be deeply personal, reflective, or politically aware, and the production often favors an immediate, live-in-the-room feel that preserves grit and dynamic headroom. DIY networks, small labels, and Bandcamp-era distribution helped the sound spread globally, while collaborations with post-rock, post-hardcore, and shoegaze/blackgaze aesthetics gave the style a widescreen, cinematic intensity without losing its basement-show urgency.

Bedroom skramz is a lo‑fi, DIY strain of screamo (aka skramz) that embraces home-recorded aesthetics, small-room acoustics, and intensely personal songwriting. It blends the frantic, emotive vocals and dynamic volatility of 1990s/2000s screamo with the confessional intimacy and production choices of bedroom pop and lo‑fi emo. Expect clipped microphone screams, jangly or twinkly guitars tracked direct or through amp sims, drum programming or minimally mic’d kits, and mixes that value immediacy and texture over polish. The scene is largely internet-native—thriving on Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and Discord—where solo artists and tiny collectives trade files, samples, and feedback. The result is a cathartic, small‑scale sound that feels both urgent and diaristic.

Blackened screamo is a hybrid of skramz-era screamo and second‑wave black metal aesthetics. It blends the genre’s raw, emotionally charged vocals and desperate dynamic surges with tremolo‑picked guitar figures, blast beats, and an enveloping, cold atmosphere. Typical songs pivot between blistering speed and mournful, reverb‑drenched expanses. The harmony favors minor keys, dissonant clusters, and chromatic movement, while production often embraces intentional abrasion—lo‑fi edges, room bleed, and cavernous ambience—to intensify the sense of urgency and bleakness. Lyrically, blackened screamo carries screamo’s confessional, existential, and socially critical core, but frames it with black metal’s desolate, sometimes apocalyptic tone. The result is a cathartic, high‑intensity style that feels both immediate and vast.

New York hardcore (NYHC) is a regional strain of hardcore punk born in New York City that hardened the style’s speed, street-tough attitude, and gang-vocal immediacy. It is characterized by short, fast songs; barked, highly rhythmic vocals; two-step and D‑beat grooves that pivot into crushing halftime breakdowns; and lyrics about street life, unity, PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), straight edge, and social struggle. Compared to earlier U.S. hardcore, NYHC emphasized heavier guitar tones, tighter syncopation, and crowd‑participation moments designed for mosh pits. The scene coalesced around venues like CBGB and A7, combining Lower East Side punk grit with elements of metal and, later, hip hop. Its impact radiated globally, seeding youth‑crew straight edge, crossover thrash, metalcore, and rapcore.
