Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Son Nica
Son nica is a Nicaraguan popular style that adapts the Afro‑Cuban son template to local mestizo song and dance traditions. It is typically guitar-led, with a buoyant, syncopated groove for dancing, narrative and humorous lyrics, and catchy, call‑and‑response refrains. The style blends the clave-based propulsion and montuno feel of Cuban son with the melodic sensibility and harmonies found in Nicaragua’s waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas. Ensembles often feature lead and rhythm guitars (sometimes a requinto), upright or electric bass with a tumbao, maracas and güiro, bongó or hand percussion, and—on occasion—marimba de arco doubling riffs or providing color. Harmonically it favors I–IV–V progressions, bright major keys, and turnarounds that set up the coro/montuno.

Trova
Trova is a Cuban singer‑songwriter tradition that emerged in the late 19th century, centered on itinerant guitar‑accompanied vocalists who composed and performed their own songs. Characterized by intimate, lyrical delivery and refined guitar accompaniment, trova blends Spanish poetic songcraft with Cuban rhythmic sensibilities (notably the habanera pulse). Themes commonly include love, longing, social observation, and patriotic sentiment, often presented in strophic forms suitable for serenades or small gatherings. The tradition laid the groundwork for Cuban bolero and later songwriter movements, preserving a focus on melody, poetic text, and expressive, ornamented vocal lines.

Central American Music
Central American music is an umbrella term for the diverse traditional and popular styles of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. It reflects a deep syncretism: Indigenous (e.g., Maya, Lenca, Pipil, Miskito) melodic and ritual practices; Iberian string, song, and dance forms from the colonial era; and Afro‑diasporic rhythms and call‑and‑response carried via the Caribbean. Signature expressions range from Guatemalan marimba orquesta repertoires and Garifuna punta/paranda along the Caribbean coast, to cumbia centroamericana, calypso limonense in Costa Rica, and Panama’s reggae en español that helped set the stage for reggaeton. Across the region, you hear marimba timbres, hand drums and shakers, off‑beat patterns tied to clave logic, simple yet emotive harmonies, and lyrics in Spanish, Kriol, Garifuna, and Indigenous languages.
