Santé Engagé
Santé engagé (literally “engaged song” in Mauritian Creole) is a Mauritian protest-music tradition that combines sung and rapped social commentaries with the island’s popular séga rhythm. Built around the ravanne (frame drum), maravanne/kayamb (shaker), and triangle—often alongside guitar, bass, and drum kit—it absorbs Indian, Chinese, and wider Western songcraft (folk, rock, reggae, and hip hop). Lyrics—frequently in Kreol Morisien, but also in French, English, and Bhojpuri—address labor rights, language politics, inequality, corruption, and everyday struggles, turning dance-ground grooves into public forums for critique and solidarity. Musically, it keeps séga’s lilt and call‑and‑response choruses while welcoming spoken‑word/rap sections and reggae offbeats, creating a flexible vehicle for collective expression and street‑level storytelling.

Séga
Séga is a Creole dance‑music tradition from the southwest Indian Ocean, most closely associated with Mauritius (and also present in Réunion and Rodrigues). It is built on hand percussion, call‑and‑response singing, and a lilting, swaying groove that invites circular hip movements. Traditional ensembles center on the ravanne (a large frame drum), the maravanne/kayamb (a shaker made from dried sugarcane flower seed pods), and a metal triangle. Modern bands often add guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum kit while preserving the characteristic beat. Lyrics are typically in Mauritian Creole and speak with wit and warmth about everyday life, love, celebration, and social observation. Rhythmically, séga usually leans on a gently swung, buoyant pulse (often felt in 6/8 or a swaying 4 subdivided in three) with interlocking percussive patterns. Harmonies are simple and major‑key leaning, supporting singable melodies and refrains.

Seychelles & Mascarene Islands Music
Seychelles & Mascarene Islands music is the Creole-rooted musical landscape that emerged across Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, and the Seychelles in the southwest Indian Ocean. It blends Afro-Malagasy drumming and call-and-response with European (especially French) dance forms and melodies, and later, South Asian (notably Bhojpuri/Indian) influences from indentured communities. Hallmark idioms include the swaying 6/8 of séga and moutya, and the earthy, trance-like pulse of maloya. Core timbres come from hand percussion (ravanne/roulèr), shaker-rattles (kayamb/maravanne), triangles, and the bobre musical bow, with voices delivered in local Creole languages. In the late 20th century, electric instruments and global diasporic styles (reggae, zouk, soca) catalyzed hybrids like seggae and electronic maloya, keeping dance at the center while retaining communal storytelling and resistance themes.
