Rock In Opposition
Rock in Opposition (RIO) is a late‑1970s movement of progressive and experimental rock groups who united in explicit opposition to a commercial music industry that refused to recognize or support their music. Rather than a strict musical style, RIO is a banner and aesthetic: fiercely independent production; complex, often dissonant composition; chamber‑like instrumentation; left‑leaning, critical or satirical politics; and a commitment to avant‑garde techniques imported from modern classical music, free improvisation, and radical jazz. The sound typically blends rock rhythm sections with winds and strings (e.g., bassoon, clarinet, violin), intricate counterpoint, odd meters, abrupt contrasts, and through‑composed forms that defy verse–chorus conventions.

Progg
Progg is a Swedish countercultural music movement of the early 1970s characterized by left‑wing politics, grassroots organizing, and a deliberate rejection of commercial mainstream music. Although its name resembles "prog," progg is not simply progressive rock; it spans folk, rock, jazz, psychedelia, and experimental forms tied together by socially conscious lyrics and DIY ethics. Typical progg recordings favor Swedish‑language vocals, collective authorship, and community‑run labels, and they often fuse Swedish folk melodies and dance rhythms with electric rock instrumentation. The result ranges from acoustic protest songs and theatre‑music to fuzz‑driven jams and complex, RIO‑leaning avant‑rock, united by an emphasis on political content and cultural independence.

Progressive Rock
Progressive rock is a rock subgenre that expands the genre’s formal, harmonic, and conceptual boundaries. It favors long-form compositions, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic musicianship, often drawing on Western classical, jazz, folk, and psychedelic idioms. Typical hallmarks include multi-part suites, shifting time signatures, extended instrumental passages, recurring motifs, and concept albums that present unified themes or narratives. The sound palette commonly features electric guitar, bass, and drums alongside an array of keyboards (Hammond organ, Mellotron, Moog/ARP synthesizers, piano), woodwinds or brass, and occasional orchestral additions. Lyrics often explore science fiction, mythology, philosophy, social commentary, and introspective themes.
