Connecticut indie is a regional strain of U.S. indie rock that blends the heartfelt directness of emo-revival with the fuzzy guitars, DIY ethics, and adventurous textures of New England’s underground. Rooted in college-town and small-city scenes (Middletown, New Haven, Willimantic, Hartford), the sound swings between twinkly, lyrically confessional indie and louder, shoegaze- or noise-tinged guitar rock. You’ll hear gang-vocal catharsis, transparent production that favors live-room energy, and occasional orchestral or synth flourishes that reflect the area’s art-school and experimental leanings. While it is geographically defined, the micro-scene’s bands networked nationally through house shows, small labels, and online communities, making Connecticut indie both locally grounded and widely connected.

Dark wave is a moody, melancholic offshoot of post-punk and new wave that emphasizes minor-key harmonies, somber timbres, and introspective or romantic lyrical themes. It blends the icy textures of early synthesizers and drum machines with reverb-laden guitars and melodic, driving basslines. The style typically features baritone or ethereal vocals, atmospheric production with heavy use of chorus, delay, and reverb, and tempos that range from slow and brooding to mid-tempo and danceable. Dark wave spans both guitar-oriented and synth-forward approaches, and often overlaps with related movements such as coldwave, minimal wave, and ethereal wave.

Ethereal wave is a branch of post-punk/gothic-adjacent alternative music defined by shimmering, reverb-saturated textures, airborne vocal delivery, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere over aggression. It often features chorus- or delay-drenched guitars that blur into pad-like harmonies, minimal or programmed percussion, and bass lines that drift rather than drive. Vocals—frequently female-led—tend toward breathy, angelic timbres, melismatic phrasing, non-lexical vocalise, and poetic or impressionistic lyrics. Harmonies favor modal or diatonic palettes with suspensions and added tones (sus2, sus4, add9), producing a weightless, bittersweet feel. The overall production aesthetic, popularized by 4AD acts, evokes a dreamlike, otherworldly space that can lean medieval, ambient, or neoclassical depending on the artist.

Visual kei is a Japanese rock/metal-centered movement defined as much by its theatrical, gender-fluid visual presentation as by its sound. Bands employ elaborate makeup, dramatic hairstyles, flamboyant or gothic costumes, and stylized stagecraft to create a total art experience that fuses music and spectacle. Musically, visual kei spans hard rock, heavy/speed metal, punk/post-punk, new wave, and gothic influences, often blending melodic hooks with virtuosic guitar work, dynamic arrangements, and emotionally charged vocals. Lyrical themes commonly explore romance, decadence, existential angst, fantasy, and nostalgic longing, while arrangements may incorporate strings, synths, or piano for cinematic effect. Substyles like kote kei (early, heavier), Nagoya kei (darker, post-punk/goth-leaning), and later softer or pop-inflected variants illustrate its breadth and evolution.
