Forró
Forró is a popular dance-music tradition from Brazil’s Northeast, centered on the trio of accordion (sanfona), zabumba (bass/tenor drum), and triangle. It encompasses a family of rhythms—most notably baião, xote, arrasta-pé, and xaxado—and is performed for partner dancing at parties and the June festivals (Festas Juninas). The style balances infectious, syncopated grooves with singable melodies and simple, diatonic harmony. Lyrically, forró often celebrates rural life, love, longing (saudade), and the culture of the sertão. Over time, it has branched into substyles ranging from the acoustic, rootsy pé-de-serra to modern, amplified and electronic variants.

Embolada
Embolada is a fast-paced, improvised sung-poetry style from Brazil’s Northeast, typically performed by two singers (emboladores) who trade witty, tongue‑twisting verses over a driving pandeiro rhythm. It is closely related to coco and to the broader repentista tradition of extemporaneous verse, blending Afro‑Brazilian rhythmic cells with Iberian poetic structures and local storytelling. Performances often feature call‑and‑response, wordplay, satire, and topical commentary, with singers competing in verbal duels that prize quick thinking, metric control, and crowd engagement.

Cantoria
Cantoria is a Northeastern Brazilian tradition of improvised sung poetry, typically performed by two singer-poets (cantadores) who accompany themselves on the viola caipira (10‑string Brazilian guitar). Firmly rooted in the décima tradition and the wider practice of repente (improvised verse), cantoria features quick-witted verbal duels, strict syllabic meters, and sophisticated rhyme schemes delivered over cyclical harmonic patterns. Performances balance humor, social commentary, spirituality, and regional lore, with audiences often proposing themes while the poets extemporize. Musically, cantoria favors lilting melodies, modal shadings, and steady I–IV–V progressions, while metrically it relies on canonical stanza forms such as sextilha, septilha, and the espinela décima. Its timbre is defined by the bright, resonant viola caipira, whose open tunings provide rich drones and sympathetic resonance.

Repente
Repente (also called cantoria de viola or repentismo) is a Northeastern Brazilian tradition of improvised sung poetry in which two singers (repentistas) engage in lyrical duels. Accompanied primarily by the viola caipira (ten‑string guitar), performers improvise verses on a given theme, responding to one another with wit, metaphor, humor, and social commentary. Common metrical forms include sextilha (six lines), septilha (seven), décima (ten, often in the Espinela scheme), and hendecasyllabic patterns such as galope à beira‑mar and martelo agalopado. Repente is closely connected to cordel literature and to public challenges (desafios), and it thrives in markets, fairs, festivals of violeiros, and radio/TV contests across Brazil’s Northeast.
