Classic Pakistani pop refers to the wave of Urdu (and occasionally Punjabi) popular music that crystallized from the late 1960s through the 1990s. It fuses Western pop and rock song forms with South Asian melodic sensibilities, filmi arranging traditions, and light classical ornamentation. Hallmarks include catchy verse–chorus hooks, clean lead vocals with melisma, synths and drum machines in the 1980s, and guitar‑pop textures in the 1990s. The sound was shaped by television (PTV) variety shows, film studios in Karachi and Lahore, and a thriving cassette culture. It produced pan‑regional hits that resonated across South Asia and the diaspora, setting the stage for later Pakistani pop‑rock and Sufi‑rock movements.
