Krishnacore is a subgenre of hardcore punk that fuses the speed, aggression, and communal energy of the New York hardcore scene with the devotional philosophy and imagery of the Hare Krishna (ISKCON) tradition.

Musically it retains hardcore’s fast tempos, shouted gang vocals, and mosh-friendly breakdowns, while lyrically it foregrounds themes from the Bhagavad-gītā and bhakti-yoga such as detachment, devotion, karma, vegetarianism/veganism, and sobriety. Bands occasionally weave Sanskrit mantras, kirtan-style call-and-response, or brief harmonium/tabla passages into otherwise guitar-driven arrangements.

Krishnacore is closely tied to straight edge culture and the early-1990s NYHC milieu, using the intensity of hardcore as a vehicle for spiritual self-discipline and social ethics.

It encompasses a range of forms—such as bhajans, abhangs, kirtans, and Sufi songs—that are designed to invoke the divine, cultivate devotion (bhakti), and foster collective participation. Musically, Devotional draws on raga-based melodies, cyclical tala (meter), and a drone foundation (tanpura or shruti box), while accommodating both austere chant-like settings and richly ornamented, improvisatory singing. Performances may be solo or call-and-response, accompanied by harmonium, tabla/dholak, handclaps, cymbals (manjira), or mridangam, and rendered in many languages including Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali, and Urdu. Modern recordings range from traditional temple and dargah repertoires to studio-produced devotional pop and global kirtan, with arrangements that can include acoustic guitars, keyboards, and ambient textures. The lyrical focus remains on praise, remembrance of divine names, surrender, and moral or philosophical reflection.

Hardline is an extremist offshoot of straight edge hardcore that emerged around the turn of the 1990s in the United States. It combined the fast, confrontational sound of hardcore punk with a highly codified ideology centered on militant veganism, drug- and alcohol-free living, sexual conservatism, and an uncompromising stance on environmental and animal liberation. Musically, hardline bands leaned into metallic hardcore: rapid-fire drum patterns, thrash-informed riffs, down-tuned chugging, and breakdowns designed for intense pit energy. Vocals are typically shouted or barked, with gang vocals and slogan-like choruses that read like manifestos. Beyond the music, hardline functioned as a self-identified movement with chapters, zines, and a formal manifesto, which made it one of the most ideologically explicit currents in hardcore. Its rhetoric and aesthetics—stark imagery, polemical lyrics, and a militant tone—left a lasting mark on later vegan straight edge and certain regional scenes.

Youth crew is a late-1980s strain of straight edge hardcore centered on fast, no-frills songs, anthemic gang vocals, and a distinctly positive, community‑minded ethos. It arose from the New York–New Jersey–Connecticut hardcore circuit and spread to Southern California and Boston. Musically, youth crew emphasizes brisk tempos, tight power‑chord riffs, punchy two‑step and skank beats, short breakdowns, and shouted, call‑and‑response hooks designed for sing‑alongs. Lyrically it champions personal responsibility, sobriety (straight edge), friendship, unity, and self‑improvement, often rejecting cynicism in favor of optimism. The aesthetic—athletic gear, crew‑cut energy, bold typography—matched the music’s clean, disciplined feel. Though compact in its original era, youth crew’s spirit and writing style strongly informed later melodic hardcore and parts of post‑hardcore and metallic hardcore.

Straight edge is a strain of hardcore punk defined as much by its ethical stance as by its sound. Hare Krishna is a devotional music tradition centered on congregational chanting (kīrtan) and hymn singing (bhajan) from the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava lineage founded by Śrī Caitanya in 16th‑century Bengal. At its core is call‑and‑response singing of the mahā‑mantra (the "Hare Krishna" mantra) accompanied by hand cymbals (karatāls), double‑headed drum (mṛdaṅga), and often harmonium. It emerged in the mid‑2000s after the publication of Michael Muhammad Knight’s novel The Taqwacores, which imagined a house full of Muslim punk misfits and helped catalyze a real-world scene. Musically, taqwacore leans on punk rock and hardcore templates—fast tempos, power‑chord riffs, shouted/sung vocals—while sometimes drawing on South Asian or Middle Eastern rhythmic accents, language mixing (English with Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic, etc.), and occasional melodic turns suggestive of Hijaz/Phrygian-dominant modes. Vegan straight edge (often stylized xVx) is a militant, ideologically driven current within the hardcore/metalcore underground that fuses straight edge sobriety with vegan ethics and animal liberation. Musically it leans on metallic hardcore: down-tuned guitars, palm‑muted chugs, two‑step and d‑beat propulsion, and shout‑along gang vocals. Lyrically it is unambiguous—songs advocate veganism, anti‑speciesism, anti‑corporate critique, and personal discipline, often in stark, slogan‑ready lines. The aesthetic emerged around a tight scene of 1990s bands (most famously Earth Crisis) whose sound and message helped codify a distinct identity, iconography (the xVx mark), and show culture within the broader straight edge movement.
