Nueva Trova
Nueva trova is a Cuban singer‑songwriter movement that emerged in the late 1960s, blending the poetic intimacy of the island’s older trova tradition with socially conscious, often revolutionary, lyrics. It is typically guitar‑led and intimate, but can expand to small ensembles with subtle jazz‑inflected harmonies, echoing the filin (feeling) style and the romanticism of bolero while drawing rhythmic color from Cuban son and guajira. While aesthetically close to the broader Latin American nueva canción, nueva trova is distinctly Cuban in its idiom, metaphorical language, and engagement with post‑1959 cultural life.

Bomba Y Plena
Bomba y plena refers to the paired Afro‑Puerto Rican traditions of bomba (with roots in the 17th–18th centuries) and plena (which emerged in the early 20th century), as well as the mid‑20th‑century popular band format that fused and alternated both styles on stage and record. Bomba is a participatory music-and-dance practice centered on call-and-response singing and improvisatory dialogue between a solo dancer and the lead drum (subidor or primo). It employs barrel drums (barriles), a wooden slit-stick (cua), and maraca, and features a family of rhythms (e.g., sicá, yubá, holandés, cuembé) with strong West African lineage. Plena is a topical, street-born song form often called the “periodical sung” for its news-reporting verses. It is driven by the panderos (panderetas)—three frame drums of different sizes (seguidor, punteador, and requinto)—plus güiro, with simple, catchy choruses for communal singing. In the 1950s and 1960s, dance bands in Puerto Rico and the diaspora arranged bomba and plena for horns, bass, and percussion, establishing “bomba y plena” as a cornerstone of Puerto Rican popular dance music.

Latin Jazz
Latin jazz is a fusion of jazz harmony and improvisation with Afro–Latin American rhythms, song forms, and percussion. It combines the swing, bebop, and big-band traditions with clave-based grooves such as son, rumba, danzón, and mambo, and later integrates Brazilian feels like samba and bossa nova. Typical features include the use of the clave (2–3 or 3–2), piano montunos (guajeos), bass tumbao patterns, timbales cáscara, conga marcha, and call-and-response horn "mambo" figures. While the rhythm section locks into cyclical patterns, soloists improvise using the vocabulary of jazz, creating music that is both danceable and harmonically rich.

Puerto Rican Folk
Puerto Rican folk (música folklórica puertorriqueña) is the rural and community-rooted music of Puerto Rico, spanning mountain jíbaro song forms, Afro–Puerto Rican bomba, and street-born plena. It blends Iberian poetic and harmonic traditions (décima, seis, aguinaldo, villancico) with West and Central African rhythmic languages, plus Indigenous Taíno timbral traces (e.g., güiro). Core instruments include the cuatro puertorriqueño, guitar, tiple and bordonúa; the panderos and güiro in plena; and the barriles (buleador and subidor/primo), maracas, and cua sticks in bomba. Stylistically it ranges from narrative, stanza-based songs accompanied by simple I–IV–V harmony, to call-and-response dance music driven by syncopated, polyrhythmic percussion. Themes celebrate rural life, love, humor, social commentary, and communal identity.
