Plugg is a trap-derived hip hop subgenre that rose through online, producer-led scenes—especially SoundCloud—in the mid-2010s. It is known for minimal, “compact” drum programming, sub-heavy 808 basslines, and bright, sparkly melodic loops (often piano, bell-like keys, airy pads, or icy synth leads). Vocals are typically melodic and laid-back, leaning into Southern rap cadences and Auto-Tune, with hooks that feel floaty and repetitive over spacious low-end.

Scam rap is a late-2010s branch of hip hop that centers lyrically on internet fraud, credit card swiping, identity theft, and the broader hustle culture surrounding online schemes. Musically, it favors sparse, often loop-based trap beats with punchy drums, sub-bass, and minimal melodic material. Rappers commonly use a deadpan or conversational delivery, punch-in recording, and off-kilter bar placement that rides just ahead of or behind the beat. The tone is equal parts instructional, braggadocious, and comedic, with jargon-rich storytelling that reads like play-by-play tutorials of illicit schemes. The style is most closely associated with the Detroit/Flint scene, where its punch-in flow, dry humor, and hyper-specific detail became stylistic signatures.

Chopped and screwed is a hip-hop remix technique and regional style that slows songs down dramatically—often to around 60–70 BPM—and lowers the pitch, creating a syrupy, heavy-lidded feel. DJs then "chop" the audio by cutting, repeating, and stuttering phrases, adding backspins, brakes, and pauses to exaggerate groove and space. Pioneered in Houston, Texas by DJ Screw in the early 1990s, the sound is closely tied to car culture (SLABs) and the codeine-lean aesthetic. While originally rooted in mixtapes of Southern rap, the approach has since been applied to R&B, pop, and even electronic music, becoming a widely imitated post-production sensibility across the internet era.
