Souldies
Souldies is a modern revival of classic lowrider “oldies” soul—slow, tender ballads rooted in 1960s and early-’70s sweet soul and doo‑wop aesthetics, reimagined by a new generation of largely Chicano/Latinx artists in Southern California. Characterized by warm, analog-leaning production, mellow backbeats, honeyed vocal harmonies, and heart‑on‑sleeve lyricism, the style favors mid‑slow tempos, tape‑like saturation, spring/plate reverb, and minimalist yet expressive arrangements. English and Spanish (or Spanglish) lyrics often explore love, longing, devotion, and cruising/lowrider culture. Souldies sits at the intersection of classic soul, rhythm & blues, northern soul selections, and Latin soul, offering a contemporary, community‑centered sound that feels both timeless and newly personal.

Go-Go
Go-go is a percussion-heavy, mid-tempo offshoot of funk that originated in Washington, D.C. It emphasizes an unbroken, danceable groove built from drum kit "pocket" rhythms interlocking with congas, timbales, cowbell, and rototoms. Unlike most popular forms that focus on discrete songs, go-go is designed for continuous live performance: bands vamp on riffs, chain songs into medleys, and keep the beat going while the lead talker (MC) drives call-and-response with the crowd. Bass locks into syncopated ostinatos, guitars provide percussive scratches and clipped chords, keyboards fill textures, and horn stabs punctuate the groove. The feel draws from funk, R&B, and Latin/Caribbean percussion, with a strong community-centered, party-forward ethos. Later variants such as the D.C. "bounce-beat" style slowed the tempo and foregrounded tom-rolls and 808 drops while retaining the signature audience participation.

Breakbeat
Breakbeat is a broad branch of electronic music defined by its use of broken, syncopated drum patterns ("breakbeats") rather than straight four-on-the-floor rhythms. Producers typically build tracks from looped and chopped drum breaks—often sampled from vintage funk, jazz, and R&B recordings—layered with basslines, synths, and effects. As both a production technique and a stylistic umbrella, breakbeat underpins and intersects with many scenes: from old‑school hip‑hop turntablism and electro to the UK rave continuum (breakbeat hardcore, big beat, Florida breaks) and onward to garage-derived styles. While not synonymous with jungle and drum & bass, the same culture of sampling and chopping classic breaks (e.g., the Amen break) helped inform those genres as well.

Deep Funk
Deep funk is a raw, hard-edged strain of funk that prioritizes drum-and-bass-driven grooves, terse horn stabs, and gritty, unpolished production. Emerging at the tail end of the 1960s, it captures the most stripped-down, rhythm-first aspects of funk—vamps on one or two chords, prominent syncopation, and an emphasis on “the one” —often recorded by regional bands on small labels and released as 7-inch singles. Vocals tend to be call-and-response or fervent shouts, while instruments such as drum kit, electric bass, rhythm guitar, Hammond organ or clavinet, and tight horn sections carry the energy. The term “deep funk” later became associated with crate-dug obscurities and a 1990s/2000s revivalist movement that honored the sound’s rugged, dancefloor-focused aesthetic.
