Gufeng
Gufeng (古风, literally “ancient style”) is a modern Chinese pop-adjacent style that evokes the sound-world, imagery, and poetics of premodern China. It blends traditional instruments, pentatonic melodies, and classical literary diction with contemporary songwriting, recording, and distribution practices. Emerging largely from online communities and ACG (anime–comics–games/donghua) fandoms, Gufeng favors lyrical themes such as mountains-and-rivers landscapes, courtly romance, martial-arts chivalry, and historical fantasy. The production commonly combines guzheng, pipa, dizi, xiao, and erhu with soft pop arrangements, cinematic pads, and subtle electronic beats, resulting in a nostalgic yet fresh sound that is distinct from mainstream Mandopop.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Er Ge
Er ge (儿歌) refers to Mandarin Chinese children’s songs that blend traditional nursery rhymes with modern melodic songwriting and simple, catchy choruses designed for young voices. The style favors pentatonic, stepwise melodies, clear diction, repetition, and movement-friendly rhythms. Lyrics typically center on animals, nature, family life, etiquette, school, and playful imagination, often using onomatopoeia and call-and-response to engage children. Arrangements range from solo voice with piano or guitar to children’s choirs accompanied by Orff instruments, light Chinese folk timbres (dizi, erhu), and contemporary pop backings. As a distinct recorded and educational repertoire, er ge emerged in the early 20th century alongside school music and later grew through radio, film, and television into a pan–Chinese-language canon shared across Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the diaspora.
