Christian
Christian (often shortened to Christian music or CCM in market terms) is an umbrella genre for popular and worship-oriented music whose lyrics explicitly express the Christian faith. It blends contemporary songwriting and production with devotional intent, ranging from pop and rock to folk, country, and modern worship anthems designed for congregational singing. While rooted in centuries of church music and hymnody, the modern "Christian" genre coalesced in the late 1960s United States with the Jesus Movement, later building its own labels, radio networks, and touring circuits. Today it includes radio-friendly CCM, stadium worship, youth-focused pop/rock, and stylistic fusions that carry Christian themes into nearly every mainstream style.

Baptist Gospel
Baptist gospel refers to the stream of African American gospel music that coalesced in Baptist congregations—especially those affiliated with the National Baptist Convention—where blues and jazz inflections transformed 19th‑century spirituals and lined‑out hymnody into a modern, highly expressive worship music. The style features call‑and‑response between a lead singer and choir or congregation, handclapping on 2 and 4, melismatic improvisation, and a strong focus on testimony and exhortation. Its modern emergence is closely tied to Chicago in the early 20th century, when Thomas A. Dorsey fused blues harmony and rhythm with church songs, helped organize the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, and popularized a new performance practice that Baptist churches gradually embraced—especially after the National Baptist Convention publicly endorsed the new gospel music in 1930.

Southern Gospel
Southern gospel is a Christian vocal music tradition rooted in the American South that centers on close-harmony ensembles—most famously male quartets—singing testimonies of faith, hope, and salvation. It is typically piano-led, with supportive acoustic or electric guitars, bass, and light drums, and it emphasizes rich, stacked harmony parts (lead, tenor, baritone, bass) and memorable, congregational choruses. Musically, it blends the harmony craft of barbershop and shape-note/Sacred Harp singing with the tunes and storytelling of early country and Appalachian folk. Songs often feature clear verse–chorus forms, dramatic dynamic builds, and a signature last-chorus key change. Lyrically, the style is explicitly evangelical, focusing on redemption, heaven, personal testimony, and encouragement.
