Nova Vanguarda Paulistana
Nova vanguarda paulistana is a 21st‑century renewal of São Paulo’s avant‑garde song movement, reviving the independent, experimental spirit of the original Vanguarda Paulista (late 1970s–1980s) while speaking to contemporary urban Brazil. It blends MPB songwriting with angular guitars, jazz‑inflected horns, Afro‑Brazilian percussion (candomblé/ijexá toques), samba’s rhythmic vocabulary, and post‑punk/no wave edge. The results are songs that are literate and socially aware, yet physically driven by polyrhythms and timbral experimentation.

Brazilian Hip Hop
Brazilian hip hop (often called "rap nacional") adapts the core aesthetics of U.S. hip hop—MC-led storytelling, sample-based beats, and DJ culture—to Brazilian realities, accents, and rhythms. It balances gritty street reportage with poetic social critique, frequently referencing life in the periferias (urban outskirts), racism, police violence, and everyday resilience. Musically it ranges from classic boom-bap to trap-inflected productions and occasional fusions with samba, MPB, and funk carioca, creating a distinctly local cadence and swing. Over time, it has grown from a grassroots movement centered on breakdance circles and DIY shows to a mainstream force, launching influential albums, cyphers, and festival circuits while nurturing powerful scenes in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and beyond.

Vanguarda Paulista
Vanguarda Paulista (Paulista avant‑garde) is a late‑1970s/early‑1980s experimental song movement from São Paulo that fused MPB songwriting with daring modernist procedures, urban satire, and DIY production. It blends samba and choro grooves with jazz harmony, art‑rock attitude, serialist/atonal writing, spoken‑sung delivery, and theatrical performance. The result is literate, rhythmically playful music that is at once tuneful and angular, witty and critical, and unmistakably paulistano in its references to the city’s everyday life.

Sambalanço
Sambalanço is a Brazilian dance-oriented offshoot of samba that blends the rhythmic drive of samba with the harmonic sophistication and improvisational language of jazz. It favors lively, swinging grooves, crisp arrangements, and catchy melodic hooks designed for the dance floor. Emerging in the 1960s, especially in the nightclub scenes of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the style sits between bossa nova’s cool subtlety and samba-jazz’s virtuosity. Piano–bass–drums trios and compact horn sections often play syncopated samba patterns with walking or syncopated bass lines, extended jazz chords, and occasional solos, all supporting vocals that celebrate urban life, love, and the sheer joy of dancing.
