AOR (often read as Album-Oriented Rock and, in stylistic terms, Adult-Oriented Rock) is a polished, melody-forward strain of rock geared for FM radio and arena stages. It pairs sleek production with anthemic choruses, soaring vocals, and a balance of guitar crunch and prominent keyboards, aiming for broad appeal without sacrificing musicianship. In practice, AOR sits between hard rock and soft rock: tight rhythm sections, glossy multi-tracked harmonies, clean-to-overdriven guitar leads, and radio-friendly structures. Its repertoire spans driving uptempo anthems and emotive power ballads, with frequent key changes for climactic final choruses, meticulously layered arrangements, and lyrical themes of romance, resilience, and escape.

Smooth jazz is a radio-friendly offshoot of jazz that blends the harmonic vocabulary and improvisational flavor of jazz with the gentle grooves of R&B, pop, and easy listening. It emphasizes melody, polished production, and laid‑back rhythms over extended improvisation or complex swing feels. Typically mid‑tempo and sleek, smooth jazz favors clean electric guitar, soprano or alto saxophone leads, warm electric piano (Rhodes) and synth pads, and a tight, understated rhythm section. The result is music designed for relaxed listening—romantic, urbane, and sophisticated—yet still rooted in jazz harmony and phrasing.

Yacht rock is a polished, jazz-tinged strain of late-1970s and early-1980s soft rock characterized by sophisticated chord changes, silky vocal harmonies, immaculate studio production, and a smooth, midtempo groove. It blends elements of blue-eyed soul, R&B, jazz fusion, and pop rock, often featuring electric piano (Fender Rhodes), clean chorus-laden guitars, saxophone leads, and glossy backing vocals. Lyrically, it tends toward romantic longing, aspirational lifestyles, and breezy coastal imagery—all delivered with understated cool.
