Breakbeat is an electronic dance music style built around syncopated, sampled drum "breaks" rather than a straight four-on-the-floor kick. Producers chop, loop, and rearrange classic drum breaks (such as the Amen, Apache, and Think breaks) to create swung, shuffling rhythms with strong backbeat accents. Emerging from the UK rave continuum, breakbeat draws heavily on hip hop’s sampling culture and electro’s machine-funk, while adopting house/acid-house sound design and club-focused arrangements. Tempos most commonly sit between 125–140 BPM (though broader ranges occur), featuring heavy sub-bass, crunchy snares, and edits/fills that propel dancefloors without relying on a 4/4 kick. As a scene, "breaks" spans everything from big-room, party-leaning grooves to techy, nu skool textures and regional variants like Florida breaks. It also functions as a foundational rhythmic vocabulary that informed jungle and drum and bass, and it underpins much of modern bass music.

Classical music is the notated art-music tradition of Europe and its global descendants, characterized by durable forms, carefully codified harmony and counterpoint, and a literate score-based practice. The term “classical” can refer broadly to the entire Western art-music lineage from the Medieval era to today, not just the Classical period (c. 1750s–1820s). The genre ranges from academic and experimental traditions to popular and dance-oriented forms. Electronic emphasizes sound design, timbre, and studio-as-instrument practices as much as melody and harmony.

Experimental music is an umbrella term for practices that prioritize exploration, process, and discovery over adherence to established genre norms. It embraces new sound sources, nonstandard tuning systems, indeterminacy and chance operations, graphic and open-form scores, extended techniques, and technology-led sound design (tape, electronics, computers, and live processing). Rather than a single style, it is a methodology and ethos: testing hypotheses about sound, structure, and performance, often blurring boundaries between composition, improvisation, sound art, and performance art. FM synthesis is a sound-design–driven electronic style built around frequency modulation techniques, where one oscillator (the modulator) alters the frequency of another (the carrier) to create complex, evolving spectra. The result is famously bright, glassy, and metallic timbres—bell tones, electric pianos, plucks, basses, and inharmonic percussion—that are difficult to achieve with subtractive or wavetable methods. As a musical aesthetic, FM synthesis coalesced around the Yamaha DX series (especially the DX7, 1983) and later 4‑operator units like the TX81Z, spreading through 1980s pop, city pop, new age, jazz fusion, and game music. Its signature presets (e.g., "E. PIANO 1", "Lately Bass") defined the sonic palette of mid‑80s to early‑90s recordings, while FM chips in consoles and arcades shaped the sound of an entire era of video games. Folk is a song-centered acoustic tradition rooted in community storytelling, everyday life, and social history. It emphasizes clear melodies, simple harmonies, and lyrics that foreground narrative, protest, and personal testimony. As a modern recorded genre, folk coalesced in the early-to-mid 20th century in the United States out of older ballad, work song, and rural dance traditions. It typically features acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), strophic song forms, and participatory singing (choruses, call-and-response).

Instrumental is music created and performed without sung lyrics, placing the expressive weight on melody, rhythm, harmony, and timbre produced by instruments. As an umbrella practice it appears in many cultures, but its modern identity cohered in Baroque-era Europe when purely instrumental forms such as the sonata, concerto, and dance suites began to flourish. Non-music is an umbrella category for recorded audio whose primary purpose is not musical performance. It encompasses spoken word, speeches, interviews, poetry readings, comedy, audio documentaries, instructional recordings, field recordings, sound effects, and other forms of organized sound meant to inform, narrate, document, or entertain without relying on melody or conventional song structure. Rather than emphasizing harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation, non-music foregrounds voice, text, ambient sound, narrative flow, informational content, and sonic texture. Its aesthetics range from raw, unedited actuality to highly produced studio works, and its scope spans archival preservation, education, performance art, and mass entertainment.

Poetry (as a recorded genre) centers on the spoken or performed recitation of verse, foregrounding voice, diction, rhythm, and imagery over conventional song structure. Performances may be entirely unaccompanied or framed by sparse accompaniment such as piano, strings, jazz combos, drones, or subtle sound design. Fourth World is a term coined by trumpeter-composer Jon Hassell to describe a "unified primitive/futuristic sound" that blends ambient minimalism, non-Western traditional musics, and studio electronics into an imagined global music. The style is characterized by modal drones, cyclical hand percussion, and timbral experimentation (often through harmonizers, delays, and pitch-shifting) applied to acoustic instruments—famously Hassell’s processed trumpet—alongside sampled or evoked elements of African, Indian, Southeast Asian, and other traditions. Rather than ethnographic authenticity, Fourth World proposes an imaginative, post-geographic sound world where the studio acts as a cultural crossroads. Musically it favors slow to mid tempos, layered polyrhythms, pentatonic or raga-like modality, microtonal color, spacious reverbs, and textural foregrounding. The result is meditative and sensuous, at once ancient-sounding and hyper-modern.

Synthesizer (as a genre tag) refers to music that foregrounds the electronic synthesizer as the primary sound source, celebrating timbre design, sequenced patterns, and the tactile possibilities of analog and digital electronics. It spans from early modular explorations and Moog/Buchla demonstrations to Berlin School sequences, space-age textures, and virtuosic keyboard reinterpretations of classical and popular repertoire. Emphasis is placed on sound design (oscillators, filters, envelopes, modulation), repeating motifs, and textural development, often with minimal lyrics or none at all. While the instrument is used across countless styles, the "synthesizer" category highlights works where the identity, techniques, and sonorities of the synth itself are the core aesthetic focus.

Video game music (VGM) is the soundtrack or background music composed specifically to accompany and enhance interactive gameplay. In its earliest decades, VGM was bound by severe hardware constraints: simple programmable sound generators (PSG) and later FM-synthesis chips limited composers to a handful of monophonic channels, basic waveforms, and tiny memory footprints. Those constraints forged a distinctive, catchy, loop-based idiom—often called “chip music” or “8‑bit”—that became the emblematic sound of early games. As technology advanced, VGM expanded into rich orchestral, rock, electronic, and hybrid palettes and adopted adaptive/interactive scoring techniques so the music could change with the player’s actions. Today it spans everything from intimate, textural ambience to full symphonic epics, while still celebrating its retro chip heritage.
