Zouk
Zouk is a high-energy dance music that originated in the French Caribbean (Guadeloupe and Martinique) in the early 1980s, crystallized by the band Kassav’. It blends Haitian compas (kadans) with local folk rhythms and the glossy production aesthetics of disco, funk, and early electronic pop. Early “zouk béton” emphasized driving, tightly arranged rhythms, bright synth-brass stabs, and call-and-response vocals. A slower, smoother branch known as “zouk love” followed, foregrounding romantic lyrics, silky harmonies, and sensual grooves. Sung primarily in Antillean Creole and French, zouk is both a party soundtrack and a cultural statement of Caribbean identity.

Jazz Caraibes
Jazz caraïbes (Caribbean jazz in the Francophone Antilles sense) blends modern jazz harmony and improvisation with the dance rhythms, percussion, and song forms of Guadeloupe and Martinique. At its core you will hear a straight‑ahead jazz rhythm section—piano, double bass/electric bass, and drum set—interlocking with ka drums and ti‑bwa patterns from gwo ka, the call‑and‑response and hand‑drum feel of bèlè, and creolized ballroom meters such as mazurka and valse créole. The result ranges from hard‑swinging, horn‑driven arrangements to lyrical, roots‑inflected ballads in French and Antillean Creole. Historically it grew alongside Parisian biguine‑jazz in the interwar years, revived in the 1970s–1990s by Antillean musicians who brought local rhythms into post‑bop and fusion, and in the 2000s matured into distinct subcurrents (e.g., gwo ka jazz) that sit comfortably next to Latin jazz while keeping a uniquely French‑Caribbean identity.

French Jazz
French jazz is the French branch of jazz that took root in Paris and other urban centers after World War I, when African American musicians and touring bands introduced the music to a receptive café and cabaret culture. It blends American jazz idioms with French musical sensibilities, notably chanson, musette waltzes, and a refined classical ear for color and melody. Its sound ranges from the acoustic swing of the 1930s Hot Club style (guitar- and violin-led ensembles) to postwar bebop, cool and modal currents, free improvisation, and later fusions with chanson and electronic music. Hallmarks include lyrical, song-like themes, supple swing feels, elegant harmonic voicings, and, in some strands, the distinctive "la pompe" rhythm of manouche guitar and the timbre of accordion and violin. Today, French jazz encompasses both traditional and forward-looking approaches: intimate acoustic combos, orchestral and filmic jazz, and hybrid forms that intersect with nu jazz, electro-swing, and contemporary European improvisation.
