Mathcore
Mathcore is an extreme offshoot of metalcore and hardcore punk characterized by rapid-fire shifts in meter, tempo, and texture. It emphasizes dissonant, angular riffing; complex, polymetric drum patterns; and whirlwind song structures that often feel deliberately chaotic. The genre fuses the precision and rhythmic gamesmanship of math rock with the aggression of hardcore and the density of extreme metal. Songs routinely feature sudden stops, blast beats, start–stop riffing, odd time signatures, and atonal or chromatic harmonies, producing a sound that is tense, volatile, and cathartic.

Experimental Big Band
Experimental big band is a forward-looking offshoot of the jazz big band tradition that applies avant‑garde composition, free improvisation, and nonstandard orchestrations to the classic large‑ensemble format. While it often retains a core lineup of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section, it commonly expands the palette with woodwind doublings, strings, electronics, unconventional percussion, and voice. Harmony ranges from extended tonal and modal writing to polytonality and atonality, often employing quartal/quintal harmony, tone clusters, and timbral (color‑based) harmonies. Rhythm favors odd meters, polyrhythms, metric modulation, and groove/texture hybrids. Forms may be through‑composed, modular, or suite‑like, and pieces frequently integrate conducted or cued improvisation, graphic notation, and other experimental score practices. Rather than a single codified style, experimental big band functions as an umbrella for large ensembles that push beyond swing and post‑bop arranging by drawing on contemporary classical approaches, free jazz, minimalism, electronics, and global traditions.

Experimental
Experimental music is an umbrella term for practices that prioritize exploration, process, and discovery over adherence to established genre norms. It embraces new sound sources, nonstandard tuning systems, indeterminacy and chance operations, graphic and open-form scores, extended techniques, and technology-led sound design (tape, electronics, computers, and live processing). Rather than a single style, it is a methodology and ethos: testing hypotheses about sound, structure, and performance, often blurring boundaries between composition, improvisation, sound art, and performance art. Listeners can expect unfamiliar timbres, unusual forms, and an emphasis on how music is made as much as the resulting sound.

Avant-Garde
Avant-garde music is an umbrella term for boundary-pushing practices that challenge prevailing norms of harmony, rhythm, timbre, form, and performance. It privileges experimentation, conceptual rigor, and a willingness to reframe what counts as music at all. Historically tied to early 20th‑century artistic modernism, avant-garde music introduced atonality, the emancipation of noise, and new forms of notation and process. It embraces indeterminacy, extended techniques, electronics, spatialization, and multimedia performance, treating sound as material to be sculpted, questioned, and reinvented.

Tango
Tango is a song-and-dance music from the Río de la Plata region, crystallizing in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay) in the late 19th century. It is characterized by a melancholic, dramatic tone; richly expressive melodies; and a distinctive rhythmic feel rooted in the habanera and milonga. Core ensembles feature bandoneón, violin(s), piano, double bass, and sometimes guitar, forming the famed orquesta típica. Across the 1920s–1950s it became a worldwide craze, moving from rough immigrant bars to grand salons and radio, developing highly sophisticated arranging and performance practices. Lyrics often employ lunfardo (Buenos Aires slang) and dwell on urban nostalgia, love, betrayal, and the neighborhood (el barrio). Note on terminology: in flamenco, “tangos” is a distinct palo (song form) with a lively 4/4 compás, often in A Phrygian, closely related in feeling to rumba flamenca. Although it shares the name and a spirited character, flamenco tangos is a different tradition from the Río de la Plata tango described above.

Balkan Brass Band
Balkan brass band is a high‑energy brass tradition from the central and western Balkans, most famously Serbia, that centers on trumpets, flugelhorns, baritone horns, tubas, and pounding double‑headed bass drums (tapan/davul) and snares. The style blends 19th‑century military brass band instrumentation with Romani performance practice and local dance rhythms. It favors blistering tempos, virtuosic trumpet leads, modal melodies (often using Hijaz/Phrygian-dominant colors), and asymmetrical meters that power social dances such as čoček and kolo. Typically performed at weddings, village festivities, and outdoor festivals like Guča, the music is both celebratory and cathartic, moving seamlessly between ecstatic dance tunes and soulful laments.
