Exotica
Exotica is a mid‑century style of mood music that blends jazz harmony, easy‑listening orchestration, and a collage of global percussion and timbral signifiers meant to evoke imaginary tropical, Polynesian, Asian, African, and Latin locales. Characterized by vibraphone and marimba leads, lush strings, woodwinds, wordless vocals, bird calls, gongs, and abundant reverberation, it creates a cinematic “armchair travel” experience. Rather than documenting specific traditions, exotica assembles stylized sound cues—Afro‑Cuban grooves, Polynesian drum patterns, pentatonic and whole‑tone colors—into atmospheric mini‑dramas. The genre flourished alongside postwar tiki culture and hi‑fi/stereo demonstrations, prioritizing vivid spatial staging and evocative orchestration over virtuoso soloing.

Steel Band
Steel band is an ensemble style centered on the steelpan (often called "steel drum"), a tuned idiophone crafted from 55-gallon oil drums. It originated in Trinidad and Tobago and is closely tied to Carnival culture. A typical steel band features sections of different pans fulfilling orchestral roles: tenor/lead pans for melody, double seconds and guitars for harmony and counterlines, cellos for inner voices, and six–ten bass pans for low-end. An "engine room" of brake irons, drum kit, congas, cowbells, and shakers drives the groove. Repertoire spans calypso and soca to classical transcriptions and jazz arrangements, all rendered with the instrument’s bright, bell-like timbre.

Calypso
Calypso is an Afro‑Caribbean vocal music and dance style that originated in Trinidad and Tobago among Afro‑Trinidadians. It blends West African kaiso traditions and French Creole carnival song practices into a witty, topical song form built for public performance and communal participation. Musically, calypso is typically in 2/4 or 4/4 with a lilting, syncopated "calypso rhythm" that often accents a 3‑3‑2 feel across the bar. Melodies favor catchy, singable refrains, call‑and‑response, and verse–chorus structures. Instrumentation historically included tamboo‑bamboo and hand percussion, then small dance bands with guitar, cuatro, upright bass, brass, and later steelpan and full brass/engine‑room sections. Lyrically, calypso is renowned for picong (good‑humored verbal sparring), double entendre, social and political commentary, and news‑of‑the‑day storytelling delivered by charismatic calypsonians in tents and at carnival.
