Free Jazz
Free jazz is a radical branch of jazz that rejects fixed chord progressions, strict meter, and conventional song forms in favor of collective improvisation, textural exploration, and spontaneous interaction. Musicians prioritize timbre, dynamics, and gesture as much as pitch and harmony, often using extended techniques (multiphonics, overblowing, prepared piano) and unconventional sounds. While rooted in the blues and earlier jazz vocabularies, free jazz frees improvisers from pre-set harmonic cycles, allowing lines to unfold over tonal centers, shifting modes, drones, or complete atonality. Rhythm sections may float without a steady pulse, or drive with layered polyrhythms and “energy playing.” The result ranges from contemplative soundscapes to cathartic, high-intensity eruptions. Culturally, the genre intersected with the civil rights era and broader avant-garde movements, emphasizing autonomy, community, and new possibilities for musical expression.

Auvergnat Folk Music
Auvergnat folk music is the traditional music of Auvergne, a mountainous region in France’s Massif Central. It is best known for the bourrée (in two or three time), vigorous circle and line dances, and for the distinctive sound of the cabrette, a bellows-blown Auvergnat bagpipe. The classic Auvergnat sound combines cabrette and hurdy-gurdy (vielle à roue) or diatonic accordion, often supported by violin, voice, and drone textures. Melodies tend to be modal (Dorian, Mixolydian), built around repetitive, dance-friendly phrases with subtle ornamentation and strong lift for the dancers’ steps. Song texts appear in French and in the local Occitan (Auvergnat) dialect. Historically rural, the style later interfaced with urban dance fashions (polka, mazurka, waltz, schottische). The late-19th‑century migration of Auvergnats to Paris helped seed the bal musette scene, where Auvergnat pipes and central‑French dance repertory mingled with the Italian accordion—an encounter that would go on to shape French popular dance culture.

Occitan Folk Music
Occitan folk music is the traditional music of Occitania, the Romance-language cultural area spanning southern France and adjacent valleys in Italy and Spain. It carries the legacy of medieval troubadour song (canso) while preserving village dance repertoires, regional instruments, and multipart vocal practices. The style is marked by modal melodies (often Dorian and Mixolydian), sustained drones from bagpipes or hurdy-gurdy, and lively dance rhythms for farandole, bourrée, rondeau, branle, and the Béarn “sauts.” Songs are typically performed in the various dialects of Occitan (Languedocien, Provençal, Gascon, Limousin, Auvergnat), with lyrics that range from love and pastoral themes to contemporary social and linguistic identity. Modern revivals have blended these roots with folk-rock, polyphonic chant, and global influences while remaining dance-led and community-centered (balèti).
