Brazilian Rock
Brazilian rock is the umbrella term for rock music created in Brazil, sung mostly in Portuguese, and colored by the country’s regional rhythms, harmonic language, and social context. From its 1960s roots in rock and roll and Jovem Guarda, through the psychedelic and Tropicália experiments at the decade’s end, to the post-dictatorship explosion of 1980s “BRock,” the style has continually absorbed global rock currents while retaining a distinctly Brazilian identity. You’ll hear electric guitars alongside samba and baião grooves, bossa/MPB chords, and lyrics that move between youthful romance, biting social commentary, and poetic introspection. Today, Brazilian rock spans classic, alternative, indie, and heavy strands, remaining a foundational pillar of Brazilian popular music.

Frevo Elétrico
Frevo elétrico is the electrified, high-energy carnival form of frevo that translates the original brass-led style into the language of amplified bands and trio elétrico sound trucks. It retains frevo’s blistering 2/4 meter, rapid melodic runs, and virtuosic counterpoint, but replaces (or doubles) horn lines with guitarra baiana/electric guitar, bass, drum kit, and keyboards. Born from the encounter between Pernambuco’s frevo tradition and Bahia’s emerging trio elétrico practice, it is designed for large, mobile outdoor performance, with bold riffs, driving percussion, and crowd-rousing breaks that keep dancers in constant motion.

Frevo
Frevo is a fast, brass-driven carnival music from Pernambuco, Brazil, especially associated with the cities of Recife and Olinda. It is characterized by dazzling, syncopated melodies, staccato horn lines, and relentless 2/4 rhythmic propulsion that inspires acrobatic dance steps performed by passistas with small, colorful umbrellas. The genre encompasses several substyles: Frevo de Rua (instrumental, brass-band led), Frevo de Bloco (choral/string-led, often more lyrical), Frevo-Canção (song form with solo vocals), and Frevo Elétrico (amplified, trio-elétrico format). In 2012, frevo was inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring its deep cultural significance to Brazil’s carnival traditions.
