Matemai Mbira Group

Chimurenga is a Zimbabwean popular music style that adapts the cyclical, interlocking melodies and polyrhythms of Shona mbira music to modern band instrumentation. Electric guitars emulate mbira lines, bass holds repetitive ostinatos, and the groove is anchored by hosho (shaker) patterns and a drum kit, creating a trance-like, propulsive feel. The name means “struggle,” and chimurenga is deeply tied to political and social commentary. Lyrics—often in Shona—use metaphor, proverbs, and call-and-response choruses to address liberation, justice, and everyday life. The sound is modal, often mixolydian or minor, with concise harmonic movement that serves the interlocking textures and dance pulse.

Shona mbira music is the ceremonial and social music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, centered on the mbira dzavadzimu (a hand-held lamellophone) accompanied by hosho (gourd rattles), handclaps, and voice. It is built from cyclical, interlocking parts—kushaura (lead) and kutsinhira (responding) patterns—that create shimmering polyrhythms in a 12/8 feel. Characteristic tunings (such as Nyamaropa, Dambatsoko, and Mavembe/Gandanga) shape modal sonorities distinct from Western major/minor harmony. Traditionally performed in bira ceremonies to invite ancestral spirits, the music’s continuous cycles, subtle variation, and call-and-response vocals foster trance, community participation, and a strong sense of continuity with the past.
