Nova vanguarda paulistana is a 21st‑century renewal of São Paulo’s avant‑garde song movement, reviving the independent, experimental spirit of the original Vanguarda Paulista (late 1970s–1980s) while speaking to contemporary urban Brazil. It blends MPB songwriting with angular guitars, jazz‑inflected horns, Afro‑Brazilian percussion (candomblé/ijexá toques), samba’s rhythmic vocabulary, and post‑punk/no wave edge. The results are songs that are literate and socially aware, yet physically driven by polyrhythms and timbral experimentation.

Brazilian rock is the umbrella term for rock music created in Brazil, sung mostly in Portuguese, and colored by the country’s regional rhythms, harmonic language, and social context. From its 1960s roots in rock and roll and Jovem Guarda, through the psychedelic and Tropicália experiments at the decade’s end, to the post-dictatorship explosion of 1980s “BRock,” the style has continually absorbed global rock currents while retaining a distinctly Brazilian identity. You’ll hear electric guitars alongside samba and baião grooves, bossa/MPB chords, and lyrics that move between youthful romance, biting social commentary, and poetic introspection. Today, Brazilian rock spans classic, alternative, indie, and heavy strands, remaining a foundational pillar of Brazilian popular music.

Avant-garde music is an umbrella term for boundary-pushing practices that challenge prevailing norms of harmony, rhythm, timbre, form, and performance. It privileges experimentation, conceptual rigor, and a willingness to reframe what counts as music at all. Historically tied to early 20th‑century artistic modernism, avant-garde music introduced atonality, the emancipation of noise, and new forms of notation and process. It embraces indeterminacy, extended techniques, electronics, spatialization, and multimedia performance, treating sound as material to be sculpted, questioned, and reinvented.
