Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Highlife
Highlife is a popular music genre from Ghana that blends indigenous rhythmic cycles and song forms with Western instrumentation and harmonies. It is instantly recognizable by its bright, interlocking guitar lines (often played with a two‑finger plucking technique), buoyant polyrhythms, call‑and‑response vocals, and jazzy horn riffs. Early dance‑band highlife favored brass and woodwinds (trumpet, saxophone, trombone) and big‑band arrangements, while guitar‑band highlife drew from palm‑wine guitar styles with lighter, lilted grooves. Across its variants, the music typically sits in major or mixolydian tonalities and uses dominant 7th/9th chord colors. From its coastal roots in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to post‑independence urban dance halls, highlife has continually evolved, later embracing electric guitars, synthesizers, and drum machines—yielding contemporary uptempo, synth‑driven forms that still retain the genre’s danceable feel.

Igbo Music
Igbo music refers to the traditional and modern musical expressions of the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria. It encompasses ritual and festival drumming, gong ensembles, dances, praise-singing, and narrative song, as well as 20th‑century guitar- and band-led styles such as Igbo highlife and contemporary pop-rap in the Igbo language. Core timbres come from distinctive instruments such as the ogene (iron gong), ekwe (slit drum), udu (clay pot drum), ichaka/ishaka (rattles), igba (skin drum), oja (wooden flute), and ubo aka (thumb piano). Vocals favor call‑and‑response, tonal text-setting that respects Igbo language inflection, and proverbial, moral, and praise content. From the colonial era onward, brass band, church choral music, palm‑wine guitar, and pan–West African highlife shaped a modern Igbo sound. In turn, Igbo musicians helped define the Nigerian branch of highlife, later inspiring contemporary afropop and Igbo rap while revitalizing fast, metal-gong–driven ogene performance for dance and celebration.
