Éntekhno
Éntekhno (often rendered as entechno or entechno laïko) is a Greek art-song movement that merges the melodic language and rhythms of Greek folk and urban popular music with the orchestral palette and formal ambition of Western classical music. Characterized by carefully crafted compositions, poetry-centered lyrics, and sophisticated arrangements, éntekhno places the composer and lyricist at the artistic core. It commonly sets major Greek poetry to music, uses modal melodies drawn from demotic (folk) and rebetiko traditions, and employs odd meters such as 9/8 (zeibekiko), 7/8, and 2/4 (hasapiko) alongside Western harmonic writing. The result is popular song with elevated aesthetic aims—intimate yet symphonic, rooted in Greek tradition yet cosmopolitan in sound.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Cretan Folk Music
Cretan folk music is the traditional music of the island of Crete, characterized by the singing of improvised poetic couplets (mantinades), modal melodies, and a powerful dance culture. Its most iconic sound is the dialogue between the bowed Cretan lyra and the percussive laouto (Cretan lute), often joined by violin, the local bagpipe (askomandoura), and occasionally boulgari, mandolin, or frame drum. The repertoire is built around dance forms such as syrtos (and its local variants), pentozali, sousta, siganos, and maleviziotikos, alongside non-dance epic or lyrical songs like the mountain-born rizitika. Stylistically it blends Byzantine chant’s modal ethos with Eastern Mediterranean makam practice and Greek island folk idioms, producing melodies rich in ornamentation, drones, and rhythmic lift. In social life it is inseparable from feasts (gléntia), weddings, and village festivals, where singers trade mantinades in call-and-response while dancers circle in communal lines. Modern artists maintain the core while expanding its timbre and harmony through creative, yet respectful, innovation.

Rizitika
Rizitika are traditional Cretan folk songs associated with the “rizes” (roots/foothills) of the White Mountains in western Crete. They are typically sung a cappella by male voices, in a sober, stately manner, with a leader-chorus practice and little to no instrumental accompaniment. The songs divide broadly into two functional types: of the table (tsis távlas), sung at feasts and gatherings, and of the road (tis strátas), sung while traveling or marching. Texts are most often in the 15‑syllable Greek political verse and treat themes of heroism, exile, resistance, death, and the harsh beauty of Cretan life. Musically, rizitika employ modal melodies close to Byzantine chant and Greek demotic styles, favoring free or flexible rhythm, narrow ambitus, and unison or lightly heterophonic group delivery rather than harmony. Their tone is austere and epic, designed to carry words and communal memory above musical ornament.
