Souldies
Souldies is a modern revival of classic lowrider “oldies” soul—slow, tender ballads rooted in 1960s and early-’70s sweet soul and doo‑wop aesthetics, reimagined by a new generation of largely Chicano/Latinx artists in Southern California. Characterized by warm, analog-leaning production, mellow backbeats, honeyed vocal harmonies, and heart‑on‑sleeve lyricism, the style favors mid‑slow tempos, tape‑like saturation, spring/plate reverb, and minimalist yet expressive arrangements. English and Spanish (or Spanglish) lyrics often explore love, longing, devotion, and cruising/lowrider culture. Souldies sits at the intersection of classic soul, rhythm & blues, northern soul selections, and Latin soul, offering a contemporary, community‑centered sound that feels both timeless and newly personal.

Qaraami
Qaraami is a traditional urban song style from Somalia that crystallized in the mid‑20th century. It blends Somali poetic sensibilities and pentatonic melodic language with subtle Arab and Western touches. Characterized by highly metaphorical, emotionally charged lyrics—often about love, longing, praise, and social reflection—Qaraami is typically led by a solo vocalist accompanied by the oud (kaban) as the central instrument, with violin and light percussion supporting a gentle, swaying groove. Its melodies favor Somali pentatonic contours while adopting ornamentation and phrasing that reflect contact with Arabic art song and the cosmopolitan life of coastal cities. The genre rose to prominence during Somalia’s cultural renaissance, especially in Mogadishu and Hargeisa, becoming a cornerstone of modern Somali popular music and a living archive of poetry set to song.

Somali Music
Somali music is a family of traditional and popular styles from Somalia that blend the country’s rich poetic heritage with melodies played on the kaban (oud), hand drums, and later, electric bands. It is prized for its intricate, alliterative lyrics, call-and-response vocals, and dance rhythms such as dhaanto, alongside urban song forms like heello and qaraami. From the 1960s through the 1980s—often called the “golden age”—large state and radio orchestras, theatre troupes, and nightclub bands in Mogadishu and Hargeisa developed a distinctive sound that sits between Swahili coast taarab and Arabic maqam-based song, while incorporating East African grooves and, later, funk, disco, and jazz. Today, the tradition continues both inside Somalia and across a vast diaspora, where classic repertoires are revived and fused with contemporary pop, reggae, and hip hop.
