Folk Pop
Folk pop is a commercially friendly blend of traditional folk sensibilities and modern pop songwriting. It preserves the acoustic instrumentation, close harmonies, and storytelling of folk while adopting pop structures, memorable hooks, and radio-ready production. The genre is marked by clear vocals, singalong choruses, and warm, organic textures built around acoustic guitar, light percussion, and sometimes banjo, mandolin, or strings. Lyrically it is personal and narrative-driven, often touching on love, memory, place, and everyday life in a direct and relatable way.

Folk Rock
Folk rock is a fusion genre that blends the narrative lyricism, modal melodies, and acoustic timbres of traditional folk with the backbeat, amplification, and song structures of rock. It typically pairs acoustic or traditional instruments (acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle) with a rock rhythm section (electric guitar, bass, drums), often featuring chiming 12‑string guitar textures, close vocal harmonies, and socially conscious or storytelling lyrics. The result ranges from intimate, reflective ballads with a steady backbeat to more anthemic, roots‑driven rock. Emerging in the mid‑1960s through artists such as Bob Dylan and The Byrds, folk rock became a gateway for traditional and roots materials to enter mainstream popular music, and it seeded later movements from country rock and Americana to jangle pop and modern indie folk.

Caucasian Folk Music
Caucasian folk music encompasses the traditional vocal and instrumental practices of the South and North Caucasus, especially Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the North Caucasian republics. It is characterized by striking vocal techniques (from Georgian multipart polyphony to highly ornamented bardic song), modal melodies, and asymmetrical “aksak” meters. Hallmarks include robust drone-based polyphony and parallel fourths/fifths in Georgian song; the plaintive timbre of the Armenian duduk; the modal, melismatic art of ashugh/ashiq bards; and exuberant dance tunes like the pan-Caucasian lezginka. Common instruments include duduk/balaban and zurna (double reeds), salamuri (flute), tulum (bagpipe), panduri and chonguri (Georgian lutes), saz and tar (long- and short-necked lutes), kamancha (spike fiddle), garmon (button accordion), and doli/nagara (frame and kettle drums). Themes often evoke mountains, hospitality, heroism, love, exile, and epic memory. The music’s blend of polyphony, maqam/makam-derived modality, and complex rhythms (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 10/8) gives it a dramatic, communal, and highly kinetic character—equally at home in intimate gatherings and staged ensembles.

Dagestani Folk Music
Dagestani folk music encompasses the traditional musics of the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus, where dozens of ethnic groups (Avar, Dargin, Lezgi, Kumyk, Lak, Tabasaran, Rutul, Tsakhur, Nogai, and others) have distinct yet interrelated styles. Its core sound blends high‑energy dance rhythms (especially for the pan‑Caucasian lezginka) with ornamented, modal singing. Lead instruments often include the zurna/surnai and balaban double reeds, the kamancha bowed lute, and the garmon (Caucasian button accordion), supported by drums such as the naghara/dhol and frame drums (dap/ghaval). Saz‑type long‑neck lutes and shepherd flutes (tutek/kaval) are also heard. Textures are typically heterophonic, with drones and tight unison lines embellished individually. The music is deeply functional—performed at weddings, communal celebrations, warrior/epic recitations, and seasonal or religious occasions—while retaining strong Islamic and maqam/mugham inflections in vocal style and melody.
