Maghrebi music is the umbrella of musical traditions from the western Arab world—the Maghreb—covering Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Western Sahara. It blends Arab (maqam/ṭabʿ), Amazigh (Berber) indigenous musics, medieval Andalusian legacies, and sub‑Saharan currents carried across the Sahara. Hallmarks include modal melodies rich in melisma and ornament, cyclical rhythms (notably a buoyant 6/8 and stately 10/8), and heterophonic textures where voice and instruments decorate the same line. Core instruments include the oud, rebab (or kamanja/violin), qanun, nay/gasba (end‑blown flutes), bendir and darbuka frame drums, the guembri (sintir) bass lute, and metallic qraqeb castanets in Gnawa contexts. Lyrics appear in regional Arabic dialects (Darija), Tamazight/Amazigh languages, and Hassaniya (in the Sahara), frequently addressing love, mysticism, satire, and social life. As a living tradition, Maghrebi music spans ceremonial and devotional repertoires (Sufi brotherhoods, Andalusi nūba suites) and popular urban styles (chaabi, raï), as well as contemporary fusions with rock, hip hop, and electronic music.

Andalusian classical (also called Andalusi music, al-âla in Morocco, gharnati in western Algeria, and malouf in Tunisia) is a suite-based Arab-Islamic art music that crystallized in medieval Al-Andalus and was later preserved and elaborated in the Maghreb. It is organized into long, multi-movement suites known as nūbas (nawba), each tied to a modal family (ṭabʿ) and a set of rhythmic cycles (mīzān). The repertoire is built on strophic poetic forms such as the muwashshaḥ and zajal, set to finely ornamented, heterophonic textures. Core instruments include the ʿūd (lute), kamanja/violin (often held upright in Maghrebi practice), rebāb, qānūn, and ney, supported by frame drums (ṭār, bendir), goblet drum (darbuga), and riqq. Melodic practice uses maqām-like modal systems with microtonal intonation, rich melodic turns, and measured as well as non-metric improvisation (e.g., istikhbār). Over centuries, urban scholarly lineages in Fez, Tlemcen, Algiers, Constantine, Tetouan, and Tunis codified distinct schools, preserving nūba cycles, modes, and performance conventions that continue to define the genre today.

Arabic classical music is the art-music tradition of the Arabic-speaking world, built on the modal system of maqam and cyclical rhythmic modes called iqaʿat. It prioritizes ornate melody, nuanced intonation (including microtonal intervals), heterophonic ensemble texture, and a balance between composed forms and improvisation (taqsim). Core forms include the samaʿi (often in 10/8), longa (2/4), dulab (short prelude), muwashshah (strophic song), and the wasla (a multi-movement suite). The aesthetic of tarab—emotional ecstasy and deep musical rapture—guides performance and listening. Typical instruments include the ʿūd (fretless lute), qānūn (plucked zither), nay (end-blown flute), violin/kamanja, riqq (tambourine), and darbuka/tabla, often assembled as a takht (chamber ensemble) or, in later periods, the larger firqa (orchestra).
