Cowpunk
Cowpunk is a hybrid of country and punk that emerged at the turn of the 1980s, mixing the speed, grit, and DIY bluntness of punk rock or new wave with the twang, song forms, and storytelling of country, folk, rockabilly, and blues. The style typically features overdriven guitars playing two-step and train-beat grooves, twangy leads, and bar-band immediacy, while lyrics lean on honky‑tonk themes (heartbreak, highways, workaday life, gallows humor) delivered with punk bite. It was cultivated concurrently in Southern California and the United Kingdom, with scenes that cross‑pollinated roots rock, rockabilly revivals, and post‑punk. Many of its key artists later paved the way for alternative country, Americana, and related roots‑minded punk offshoots.

Disco
Disco is a dance-music genre and nightlife subculture that crystallized in the United States during the 1970s, drawing especially from African-American, Italian-American, Latino, and queer club communities. Musically, disco is typified by a steady four-on-the-floor kick drum, syncopated and melodic electric-bass lines, lush string sections, bright brass and horns, electric pianos and synthesizers, and percussive, choppy rhythm guitars. Arrangements often feature orchestral colors, handclaps, congas, and vibraphone or bell textures, all engineered to deliver a continuous, groove-forward experience for the dance floor. The style combines the rich orchestration and romantic sweep of Philadelphia soul with the bottom-end drive of funk and the songcraft of contemporary R&B/pop, delivered in DJ-friendly extended mixes and 12-inch singles designed for club play.

Piedmont Blues
Piedmont blues is an East Coast style of acoustic blues defined first and foremost by its guitar technique. Players use a steady, alternating-thumb bass on the lower strings while the index (and sometimes middle) finger picks syncopated melodies on the treble strings. The resulting texture imitates ragtime or stride piano: a walking/oom‑pah bass underpinning a dancing, off‑beat melody on top. Developed in the southern Appalachian foothills and the broader U.S. East Coast, the style favors clear, song‑like melodies, buoyant rhythms, and a repertoire that ranges from blues and hokum to gospel and dance tunes. Blues researcher Peter B. Lowry coined the term “Piedmont blues,” sharing credit with folklorist Bruce Bastin, to distinguish this ragtime‑based, melodically oriented approach from the more riff‑driven, modal feel of Mississippi Delta blues.
