Ambient is a form of electronic and electroacoustic music that prioritizes tone, atmosphere, and texture over conventional song structures and rhythmic drive. It typically features slow-moving harmonies, sustained drones, gentle timbral shifts, and extensive use of space and silence. Rather than drawing attention to itself through hooks or beats, ambient is designed to be as ignorable as it is interesting, rewarding both background listening and focused immersion. Artists often employ synthesizers, samplers, tape loops, field recordings, and subtle acoustic instruments, with reverb and delay creating a sense of place. Substyles range from luminous, consonant soundscapes to darker, more dissonant atmospheres.

Copla (often called copla andaluza or canción española) is a dramatic Spanish popular song style characterized by narrative lyrics, big emotions, and theatrical performance. It typically tells compact, melodramatic stories of love, jealousy, honor, betrayal, social stigma, or fate, delivered by a solo singer with highly expressive phrasing. Musically, copla favors clear tonal harmony (often minor-key), memorable melodies, and accompaniment that ranges from guitar or piano to full orchestra or band. Rhythms frequently draw on pasodoble and bolero feels, with touches of flamenco color and the Andalusian cadence that imbue the songs with a distinctly Iberian character. Historically linked to stage and cinema, copla thrives on performance: commanding vocals, precise diction, and emotional acting are as central as the music itself.

Electronic is a broad umbrella genre defined by the primary use of electronically generated or electronically processed sound. It encompasses music made with synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, computers, and studio/tape techniques, as well as electroacoustic manipulation of recorded or synthetic sources. The genre ranges from academic and experimental traditions to popular and dance-oriented forms. While its sonic palette is rooted in electricity and circuitry, its aesthetics span minimal and textural explorations, structured song forms, and beat-driven club permutations. Electronic emphasizes sound design, timbre, and studio-as-instrument practices as much as melody and harmony.

New wave is a broad, pop-oriented umbrella for styles that emerged in the mid-to-late 1970s as a sleeker, more melodic outgrowth of punk culture. Initially, the term varied by region: in the United States it was first used by critics and labels (famously Sire Records’ “Don’t Call It Punk” campaign in 1977) to rebrand punk-associated artists with more radio-friendly aesthetics; in the United Kingdom it encompassed a wider constellation of fresh, stylish post-punk-era sounds. Over time, “new wave” became a catch‑all for hooky guitar pop, synth-driven songs, danceable rhythms, and modernist production sensibilities. Sonically, it blends tight, upbeat rhythms (often disco- and reggae-informed), clean chorus/flanger guitars, prominent synthesizers, and concise, hook-led songwriting. Its visual identity—sharp suits, futurist imagery, and fashion-forward presentation—was integral, aligning with the rise of music television and emphasizing art-school wit, irony, and modern urban themes.

Pop is a broad, hook-driven style of popular music designed for wide appeal. It emphasizes memorable melodies, concise song structures, polished vocals, and production intended for radio, charts, and mass media. While pop continually absorbs elements from other styles, its core remains singable choruses, accessible harmonies, and rhythmic clarity. Typical forms include verse–pre-chorus–chorus, frequent use of bridges and middle-eights, and ear-catching intros and outros. Pop is not defined by a single instrumentation. It flexibly incorporates acoustic and electric instruments, drum machines, synthesizers, and increasingly digital production techniques, always in service of the song and the hook.

Power pop is a guitar-driven style that distills the melodic immediacy of 1960s British Invasion pop into concise, high-energy rock songs. It emphasizes big hooks, ringing guitars (often Rickenbacker-style jangle), tight vocal harmonies, and punchy, economical arrangements that typically run around three minutes. Lyrically, it leans toward youthful longing, romance, and bittersweet nostalgia, delivered with bright major-key progressions, chiming arpeggios, and sing-along choruses. Though Pete Townshend used the term in the late 1960s, the genre cohered in the early 1970s with bands like Badfinger, Big Star, and the Raspberries, and it has resurfaced repeatedly in waves through new wave, indie, and modern pop-punk contexts.

Alternative is an umbrella term for non-mainstream popular music that grew out of independent and college-radio scenes. It emphasizes artistic autonomy, eclectic influences, and a willingness to subvert commercial formulas. Sonically, alternative often blends the raw immediacy of punk with the mood and texture of post-punk and new wave, adding elements from folk, noise, garage, and experimental rock. While guitars, bass, and drums are typical, production ranges from lo-fi to stadium-ready, and lyrics tend toward introspection, social critique, or surreal storytelling. Over time, “alternative” became both a cultural stance and a market category, spawning numerous substyles (alternative rock, alternative hip hop, alternative pop, etc.) and moving from underground circuits to mainstream prominence in the 1990s.

World music is a broad, industry-coined umbrella for traditional, folk, and contemporary popular styles from around the globe that fall outside the Anglo-American pop mainstream. The label emerged in the 1980s as a retail and marketing category to group diverse regional musics for international distribution. Musically, it spans acoustic and electric instrumentation; modal, pentatonic, and microtonal pitch systems; and rhythms ranging from cyclical grooves and polyrhythms to asymmetrical meters. While the term can obscure local specificity, it also facilitated cross-cultural collaboration, festivals, and recordings that brought regional genres to wider audiences.
