Football Chant
Football chant is a form of mass, unaccompanied (or minimally accompanied) singing performed by supporters at association football matches. It relies on short, catchy melodies and simple, repetitive lyrics that can be learned on the spot and sung collectively for long stretches. Chants often borrow tunes from popular songs, hymns, children’s rhymes, folk standards, and marches, substituting team-specific lyrics and slogans. The performance emphasizes unity, call-and-response, clapping, and percussion (most commonly handheld drums) to project energy, intimidate opponents, and celebrate identity.

Batucada
Batucada is a high-energy, percussion-driven style of samba played by large drum ensembles known as baterias. It is characterized by driving 2/4 rhythms, layered polyrhythms, and a powerful collective groove designed to move large crowds, especially during Carnival parades. The core sound comes from surdos (large bass drums) that mark the pulse and interlock in tuned layers, while caixas (snares), repiniques (high, cutting toms), tamborins, chocalhos, agogôs, cuícas, and reco-recos weave dense rhythmic textures. A whistle (apito) or the repinique section leader cues breaks, call-and-response figures, and dramatic stops (paradinhas). Although mostly unpitched and ensemble-based, batucada is musical, nuanced, and highly arranged, with subtle swing, dynamic contour, and signature "bossas" (precomposed rhythmic figures) unique to each samba school’s bateria.

Murga
Murga is a carnival-rooted performance genre that blends choral singing, sharp social satire, and highly rhythmic street percussion. Typically presented by neighborhood troupes, it combines theatrical staging, elaborate costumes, and choreographed movement with a driving, snare-led groove. Although it has variants across the Hispanic world, murga is especially associated with the Río de la Plata region, where its sound crystallized into massed chorus, rapid-fire "cuplés" (satirical couplets), and set pieces that open (saludo) and close (retirada) each show. The tone ranges from festive and humorous to bitingly political, all delivered with bold vocal projection and call-and-response energy.
