Hang On The Box

Beijing New Sound is a late‑1990s/2000s wave of Beijing bands that fused post‑punk, new wave, indie rock, and garage energy with Mandarin lyrics and a distinctly urban Chinese sensibility. It emphasizes tight, driving rhythms, angular guitars, wiry bass lines, and vintage‑leaning synths, often pairing chant‑like or deadpan vocals with catchy hooks. The sound is simultaneously danceable and gritty, reflecting the pace, neon, and dislocation of Beijing’s rapid modernization. While rooted in global alternative traditions, it foregrounds Beijing’s DIY venues, label ecosystems, and the cadence of Mandarin, yielding songs that feel both cosmopolitan and unmistakably local.

Riot grrrl is a feminist punk movement and music scene that emerged in the early 1990s in the United States, centered around Olympia, Washington, and Washington, D.C. It blends the raw immediacy of punk and hardcore with explicitly feminist, anti-sexist, and DIY politics, using zines, community organizing, and confrontational performance to challenge patriarchy in music scenes and society at large. Musically, it favors short, fast, and noisy songs, shout-sung vocals, and simple, forceful chord progressions, while lyrically addressing topics such as bodily autonomy, sexual assault, gender norms, queer identity, and scene politics.
