Piano Mpb
Piano MPB is the piano‑centered branch of Música Popular Brasileira, where the repertoire and rhythmic language of Brazilian popular music are interpreted through solo piano and jazz‑style small ensembles. The style blends samba, bossa nova, choro, baião, and other Brazilian grooves with modern jazz harmony and pianistic voicing. Expect rootless extended chords, lyrical right‑hand melodies, left‑hand patterns that emulate Brazilian percussion, and elegant reharmonizations of well‑known MPB tunes alongside original compositions. Performances range from intimate, impressionistic solo pieces to swinging piano‑trio settings suited for concert halls and clubs, but the mood typically retains MPB’s warmth, subtle swing, and song‑first sensibility.

Brazilian Jazz
Brazilian jazz is the meeting point of Brazilian popular music and North American jazz, blending samba and bossa nova rhythms with jazz harmony, improvisation, and ensemble interaction. The style typically features syncopated Brazilian grooves (samba, bossa, partido‑alto) under extended jazz chord voicings and lyrical melodies. Acoustic guitar or piano often supplies a gently propulsive, off‑beat rhythmic bed, while bass and drums translate samba’s surdo and pandeiro patterns to the jazz rhythm section. Timbres range from intimate (nylon‑string guitar, brushed drum kit, flute) to expansive (full percussion batteries, horns, and electric keys). The overall feel can be both laid‑back and danceable—romantic yet harmonically sophisticated.

Candombe
Candombe is an Afro‑Uruguayan percussion tradition centered on the interplay of three barrel drums called tamboriles: chico (the high, time‑keeping drum), repique (the improvisatory, conversational drum), and piano (the deep, bass foundation). Played in a forward‑moving parade formation known as a cuerda de tambores, its groove is driven by a characteristic clave‑like timeline articulated on the shell (madera) and by the interlocking parts of the three drums. Beyond rhythm, candombe is a living cultural practice linked to Afro‑Uruguayan neighborhoods in Montevideo—especially Barrio Sur, Palermo, and Cordón—where comparsas (troupes) combine drummers, dancers, flag bearers, and emblematic characters (mamas viejas, gramilleros, and the escobero). While primarily percussive, modern song forms and fusions often add vocals, guitar, bass, and keyboards, projecting candombe into jazz, pop, and rock contexts while retaining its unmistakable swing and street‑parade energy.
